This Side of Skin, a photographic exhibition by Jenna Marie Wakani

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Monday, Oct. 17, 2005

MONTREAL - Emerging photographer Jenna Wakani is pleased to announce “This Side of Skin,” her first exhibition at the note bene* gallery, situated at 2416 Parc Ave.

The exhibition, which will feature over a dozen photographs taken by the artist over the past year, will run from Nov. 14 until Nov. 26. The gallery is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. All are welcome to attend the opening vernissage for “This Side of Skin,” which will take place Nov. 17 from 6 to 9 p.m.

Jenna Wakani has been shooting for over four years and is mostly known for her photojournalistic work. She has been a contributor to several prominent North American publications, including Maisonneuve, THIS, BUST, STRUT and Bon Appetit magazine.

In contrast to her journalistic photography, This Side of Skin unveils a more personal side of the photographer’s practice. “This work comes from my interest in pairing conventional nudes - really beautiful forms - with more organic shapes, contrasting moody interiors, plants, curious bits of flotsam,” says Wakani. “I like the empty narrative, the interpretive license it gives the viewer.”

The self-taught photographer turns 22 on Nov. 24 - halfway through the show - and considers This Side of Skin a highlight of both her professional and artistic careers. The exhibition will feature mainly diptychs and portraiture, mostly in black and white with some full-colour single frames.

This Side of Skin will run in conjunction along with “Context + Influence” by photographer Todd Brown, at the note bene* gallery.
