did you know that the phrase "rule of thumb" and term "handicapped" originated from oppression?
Rule of thumb- apparently when women were beginning to fight against domestic abuse, there was this rule that men could still whip/abuse "their" women (as that was tradition, and not about to change right away) so long as the instrument they used was smaller than the width ("rule) of their thumb. I'm not sure of the details or how accurate my recounting of that is..but wow.
Handicapped- comes from the idea that the "handicapped" were living "hand to cap," meaning that everything was handed to them and that they got everything they owned from begging and charity.
So now, apparently, things like handicapped parking signs are being changed to disabled.
Just a few of the things I'm learning while learning to be a peer mentor.
Today was 7 hours of diversity training..a lot of which was very similar from things we talked about on Sojourn, and we actually saw this video "A way home" or something like that, which I think I saw either on Sojourn or in history or something.
But anyway, now off to dinner, scavengar hunt, and meetings..
Love you all, and miss you bay folks!
