Annette was packing and admiring the
ring on her finger that Dick had given her, when her phone rang.
"Hello?"
"Hello sweetheart," her mom sing-songed.
"Hi mom, what's up?"
"When are you coming home?"
"Tomorrow, remember? I told you that already."
"Can't you come today?"
"No, mom, I have two finals tomorrow."
"Well, hurry up will you?" she laughed. "We have a big surprise for you!"
"What kind of surprise?" Annette asked a little warily.
"A yummy one! You'll love it!"
"Tell me now, mom," Annette said.
"No..."
Click.
"Annette? It's your father. It's a surprise and that's that. You want it ruined?"
"No."
"Then stop bugging your mother. She's foaming at the chops just dying to tell you."
Click.
"It's true, Annette. I can't wait to tell you!" She lowered her voice. "Do you really want to know?"
"Y-"
Click.
"Mrs. Hargrove? Shut the hell up! You have a hair appointment; get to it."
"Annette? It's your father. Your mother is busy. I have to tell you something."
"Oookay, what?"
"Trevor is here."
"..."
"Well, Annette, it's the least I could do for blowing his ear off. Damn doctors never could get his ear back on. Poor kid has tried growing out his hair and now he's got a damn cowlick where his ear is supposed to be. Ugliest damn thing I've ever seen. The boy didn't press charges so he's here and you're going to be nice."
Annette moaned.
Click.
"Annette? Sweetie, your surprise is so much fun! Want a hint?"
"I--"
"Mrs. Hargrove! Get the hell off the line woman!"
"See you tomorrow, sweetheart!"
Click.
"Now, Annette, I know things have not been well between you and Trevor, but you will make the most of it while you are home, won't you?"
"Daddy, I... I just don't think that will work."
"Annette? Don't tell me what is good for you. I know what is good for you. I'll see you tomorrow. Good bye, dear."
Click.
Annette stood still and just stared.
"Great. Real freaking great."
