Annette was sprawled on her bed, feet up on the wall, talking to her mom on the phone.
"Spring Break is next week?" Her mother asked.
"Uh-huh."
"You are coming home, right?"
"Uh..."
"Annette, you are coming home."
"..."
"Annette. Do you hear me?" Annette was frowning a little at her mother's tone.
"..."
"Annette Hargrove! I hear you breathing."
"I went on a
field trip today. Did I tell you that?"
"You did? Where did you go? Was it educational? Don't I have to sign something for you to leave the school?"
"We went to the moon. And I don't think you have to sign anything here, no." Annette answered with a sneaky little grin.
She heard her mother gasp. "That is not funny Annette. What is wrong with you lately, you are never serious anymore."
"I'm not lying, mom. We went to the moon."
"Are you high?"
Click. "Annette? This is your father. Stop lying to your mother. You'll go to hell." Click.
Annette rubbed her temple. "Tell him I'm not lying mom and no, I am not high. How could you even ask me such a thing?"
"To the moon, Annette? Really." Annette heard a clinking noise in a glass then heard a little muffling, gurgling like noise.
"Are you taking something, mom?"
"Of course not. I have a headache. You're giving me a headache, Annette. Are you coming home next week? We could go to mass together. Wouldn't you like that?"
"Well, see...there is this thing...and the other thing...and stuff...and you know with my professor...and then that, oh yeah, I almost forgot that thing where I have to...you know...so, I don't know, mom. My week is sort of pretty full and stuff."
"You're being verbose, Annette, and I do not appreciate it. Want me to put your father back on the line?"
Click. "Annette? It's your father again. Your mother has a headache. Do you know what that means for me?"
Annette's mother gasped.
"It doesn't mean anything Annette. Forget I said that. Come home Annette. It would make my life better. Just for a week." Click.
"Mom? I have to go." She hit her phone against the wall. "Mom?" Bang bang bang "My ph s b king up, mo got t o! Call morrow. Uv u bye!"
Annette hung up and dropped her phone to the floor. "Uhggggg."
