But he was afraid the dice wouldn't fall in his favor if he did that. Now he's hurting and she's hurting. Kind of a selfish selflessness, when you think about it.
But these are the reasons Raoul never wanted to promise forever. These are the kinds of things that made Raoul hesitant to commit to a relationship with her at all. Things were easier, more light-hearted, when they were just having an affair and had the opportunity to call it off if they changed their minds.
Now they're in too deep. It's gone too far. Deals have been made with Devils that they don't have the power to take down on their own. Now skeletons are dancing out of the closet and part of him regrets EVER taking this risk.
Raoul's very heartbroken. There's no getting around that. But he loves her dearly. That he was afraid to lose her is a sign of that. He would never want her to run away or, heaven forbid, kill herself. Not after they've come this far.
Might as well tough it out for the rest of the journey. Together.
