pretty lady on the corner

i was standing at the bus stop by mr sub on main today, waiting for a buddy of mine to come over when i was approached by two men.
it was about 11:00 at night and I had just stepped out of the shower and was leaning against the mr sub when the first of the two, about 5'10 in a red and blue ski jacket with a baseball cap walked up to me and asked me for a cigarette.
the second of the two followed and asked as well, though he distracted me for he looked more like jack nicholson in 'about schmidt' than anyone i was anticipating asking me for a cigarette in the middle of main street close to midnight on a friday.
the first one accepted the cigarette i gave him and thanked me, when he smiled i noticed most of his teeth missing, except for a moley-moley-austin-powers-style snaggletooth in the middle of his gob. he spoke with a drawl that can only indicate he was missing more than just a mitful of marbles, but was exceptionally sweet and grateful for the gift smoke. his associate thanked me in a similar but more aged manner and they retired to the bus bench.

a few minutes later, and after mumbling about going downtown to meet the chief, the one with the hat approached me and pointed out an OPP car driving past. he told me he was with the OPP, and asked if the burlington police and hamilton police had been working together lately. i asked him where his uniform was, and he promptly replied that he was working undercover with his partner tonight, besides, his uniform was in the shop. have to keep it in tip top shape if you want to be a member of the hamilton police!
he proceeded to pull a pair of handcuffs out of his pants pocket, followed by a wallet empty save for a card from an officer, labelled 'sargeant sanders, parole officer' in neat masculine handwriting.
he explained that this was his temporary badge until he gets his real one polished up at the polish house.

i asked him if there were a lot of bad guys on the streets tonight, and he said 'no way, not with me and flannigan on the beat'. another OPP car drove by and he pointed it out as his boss. he waved but the officer drove by without acknowledgement.

my friends' bus arrived about two minutes later, and the jack nicholson one told me to look both ways before crossing the street.
i smiled and turned to leave.
i wonder where they are now.
