Hmm, chiming in after a few months away from fandom here (but I imagine little has changed in terms of this issue, tbqh). I speak from experience with the lack of reviews - a bunch of Klaine fic that I'm not even all that proud of has a lot more reviews than some of my best genfic work - and it's definitely discouraging.

I think a lot of it comes from the fact that tumblr is now the new medium for sharing fic? If you're posting or reccing fic on tumblr, it moves so quickly through reblogs and there's so much fic that I don't think substance is really a consideration. Not to say that romance/PWP fic can't have substance, or that all gen fic is good quality, just that the standard method of sharing fic is now to post a fanningmyself.gif or whack a bunch of incoherent tags onto the post, because if you got off on the fic, surely it's a sign that it's good. And let's face it, porn is often the currency of tumblr. And all the "BNFs" (lol I hate that word) write porn/beg for more porn, so porn is going to get you fandom famous/tumblr famous.

Whereas most of the gen fic I've seen around and wanted to reblog, I've needed to stop and think of an insightful reason why people should read it and love it just as much as I did - and then the post gets long so I know people will ignore it and there's a million and one other new things already on my dash, and it kind of gets.. lost.

Just my two cents on top of all the other absolutely fucking true points that you've already made! (Because we're actually a hive mind on this issue I'm sure of it)

Sometimes I get sad that tumblr is the new way to share fic because with the rise in popularity of tumblr, the less feedback I got on my fics because it's so much easier to like and reblog something than to actually write a cohesive response to something you read and liked. Which is sad just from a social standpoint I mean I've made so many nice friends with people who reviewed my fics! In fact I think I met all of you from reviewing each other's fics! Sad face :C

We do have a hive mind I've missed you MY OTHER HALF IS HERE. btw I need to ramble at you at some point of a MWPP gen fic I want that I'll probably never get or write because effort

Definitely! And the amount of people who will reblog/like without leaving a comment on the source post, leaving me sitting here staring cross eyed at the screen and trying to figure out why they liked it.

dude i need to supplement the lack of glee fandom in my life with other things so please do!

The only problem with AO3 is the whackadoo tagging process - I know there are tricks to eliminate certain tags, but it's still a pain in the ass, even though the format is incredible and awesome.

My least favourite part of AO3's tagging system is when people use it like it's a Tumblr tagging system and ramble in them. No. Stop that. Author's notes go in the author's notes section specifically provided!!

I know. :( Please stop, this is an archive not your blog and people have to tag-wrangle basically constantly to get rid of your shit.
