I agree entirely and I don't think I really have anything new to add other than stuff from my personal experience? I actually wrote mostly pairing fic until I got into Glee fandom (well, except for one that was MEANT to be pairing fic but it was actually a proto-friendship fic between two characters I wasn't pairing together in the end), and I never really noticed how relatively ignored gen is until I started posting my own.

It's especially annoying when people are like "what's the point if there's no porn in it?!" I mean like OK each to their own but most media doesn't actually have any smuttery in it I don't see why fanfiction has to be different because of its reputation!! (My irl friends who know I write fanfiction are mostly still convinced that all I write is filthy porn. HOW BORED THEY WOULD BE.)

I think it's probably the first one; that people are looking for the 'things they don't get' with the source material, and for Glee that's probably porn even though the amount of intensely sexual performances should really be fixing that for people lmao. We do get some hints at friendships, after all - although they tend to get crippled pretty quickly - so it's possible that people are just like meh, boring! Which sucks because they're wrong, but still.

I mean, after the Blaine+Sam friendship/romance... thing became a canon thing I haven't really seen a lot of gen fic for them at all!! Which is sad. I like Blam a lot but I really like them as friends, too. There's tons of fun you could have with them that doesn't involve boning AND YET.

Tough life writing fic where nobody kisses, man.

Also BTW I totally want Shelby's romance tropes into gen tropes thing to happen wouldn't it be wonderful ;___; We should totally start a gen fest for Glee!!!

Yeah I haven't seen any of that, probably because it's tagged with Klaine or something.

Which now that I think about it is weird in and of itself because it's just another way to make it more about whoever you have paired up with X character instead of the friendship between them and Z character (with Y as the rando romantic interest in this really dumb thing sigh).

Oh god can we talk about how popular this is in the gen fics that are out there??? You're so right.

Well if you do an actual study on it please just let me know about it because I'd read the fuck out of it.

Ahhh, I see! Yeah I... have... every permutation of Klaine that's ever existed blacklisted so I haven't seen it :[ what a waste of perfectly excellent Blam, tbh.

But yeah I really dislike that trope. Especially since Z is often a lady ~~helping two dudes come together and there's plenty potential for that to go down the offensive drain really quickly u__u

Tell me about it. I'm pretty guilty of having not written any entirely lady-centric friendship fic :( but I really like it. I've actually read some Quinn+Mercedes stuff that I really loved but god forbid if I could ever find it again. (Or maybe that was actually ship fic. ... It might have been and I'm just remembering the friendship parts because they were so awesome. WHO KNOWS.)

Sobbing I wish I contributed more because then I would feel truly equipped to complain about this shit.

Hahaha, I feel you on the CONSTANT INADEQUACY!!! front. Gen fic I think is a lot more intimidating for some reason?? It feels like you have to really stand out if you want anyone to read it and it's scary sometimes :C so you're like man what's even the point and you don't even try.

aaaangst

That I'm totally guilty of not writing a lot for Glee, even though Blaine is my favorite and I like to write about him focusing on interacting with people, which happen to be the ladies, since I much prefer reading and writing Blaine+any girl from ND and that's my bias that I don't really know how to explain.

Blaine + ND girls is my bias too, but I think that's simply because of all the characters on the show, I see them as the best ones to help encourage him towards his dreams/be there when he achieves them. My Blaine-bias is actually disgusting.

You're the best.

But yeah, I agree. Also, it's interesting to write because Blaine has been at Dalton for a few years, he's pretty used to guys at this point and I think forming friendships with girls is different and nice and creates interesting dynamics.

Ahhh yesss (butting in awkwardly wow) Blaine comes from such a Dude background (has he ever actually mentioned his mom individually?) that writing him interacting with girls is the most fun! Especially since the girls on the show are generally 1000x more interesting than the guys, let's be real.

Also canon only gives us Blaine+Tina, which they almost immediately ruined because fuck you Glee :(

Hahaha true besides Blaine, a number of the girls are my faves.

We don't talk about that, Sarah, unless you want to spark a few murders.

Yeaah, I realised the other day that the only male characters I'm ~especially engaged~ with are Blaine and Sebastian. And I think I just like Sebastian so much because he's hilarious to me. The girls on that show just don't get what they deserve tbh :U

Maybe I do. Maybe I've got the axe, Kris...
