Glee Fic: We Know By Now To Say Enough (8/?)

Title: We Know By Now To Say Enough (8/?)
Rating: T/PG-13
Disclaimer: The title/lyrics used are from the song “The Secret’s In The Telling” by Dashboard Confessional.
Summary: Missing moments between Puck and Quinn during season two.
Note: In my dreams, if Puck and Quinn were to ever have something again and then break up, I want them to sing the song mentioned at the end - it would be so incredibly epic.

There is a secret that we keep
I won't sleep if you won't sleep
“You used to be just sort of unlikeable, but now I feel like punching you every time you open your mouth,” Quinn says, looking at the ceiling as if asking God for patience.

It takes a lot of restraint on Puck’s part to keep from laughing out loud because while he’ll always be on Quinn’s side, he still has his Jewish loyalties to think about.

…But as soon as glee club ends, he bursts out laughing and only Quinn understands why.

From Noah Puckerman:
Congrats on the duet.

From Quinn:
Thanks - can’t say I was expecting it. But I did enjoy Berry’s reaction.

From Noah Puckerman:
You’re going to do awesome.

From Quinn:
Who said I was nervous?

From Noah Puckerman:
I’m just saying.

From Quinn:
Thank you.

From Quinn:
Why the hell did you change your occupation on Facebook to “ambadassador”?? What does that even mean?!

From Noah Puckerman:
It means it’s up to me to find the 12th person so we can compete.

From Quinn:
Oh God. I better start praying.

From Noah Puckerman:
Hey! It’s going to happen. I’m going to be a hero.

From Quinn:
I have to go to church so I can get started on my rosary.

From Noah Puckerman:
Not going to need it!

When Puck answers the door still looking a bit disoriented as he did when he walked into the choir room, she starts cracking up.

“I’m sorry, I really am. I swore I wasn’t going to laugh, but…” she shakes her head, her hair falling into her face, which she brushes back with her hand. He doesn’t bother to hide his staring at her.

She blushes a little clears her throat. “Well, you certainly proved me wrong,” she says after a moment.

“Yeah.”

She purses her lips a little. “Are you okay? Honestly,” she asks, her voice tinged with concern.

“I was in the shower for almost an hour before. I’ll probably shower again later and I doubt I’ll ever get that smell out of my nose, but I’ll live.”

She nods before smiling a little. “You could always call Lauren Zizes if you want some TLC,” she adds, trying to sound casual, but failing.

“Hey, she saved my life. She’s pretty much my savior right now.”

Her smile falters a little bit, but she realizes that this is definitely one of those weird phases or whatever and he’s clearly traumatized from being trapped in a port-a-potty. Besides, it’s Lauren Zizes - the girl is disturbing.

“Okay…I just wanted to see how you were doing.”

He flashes her a true smile. “Thanks.”

She turns around to head back to her car, but pauses halfway down his path as if waiting for him to say something.

Nothing’s said, but the silence between them is filled with confusing feelings and some strange longing she’s not comfortable with at all.

Puck heads over to Rachel’s house with completely innocent intentions, actually. He was going to going to suggest singing a rather suggestive duet to get Finn jealous, like “Crazy In Love” or something, but Rachel practically attacks him with her mouth and he can’t really fight back. Despite her being kind of annoying, she’s a really good kisser, which he can always appreciate.

It’s not until he has her on her bed does he realize that this is so wrong and he can’t do this to Finn again.

Also, he doesn’t feel nearly as attracted to Rachel as he ever did to Quinn in that same position.

“I’m so gangsta, I’m so thug, you’re the only one I’m dreamin’ of, you see…”

He automatically glances to the back of Quinn’s head and isn’t surprised when she doesn’t turn around.

Quinn rants about having post-traumatic stress disorder and he feels the same way - his chest is tight and his heart rate is probably a little too high to be considered normal.

He tries to comfort Lauren because it’s easier than dealing with his own problems, but she hears none of it because she’s confident and actually couldn’t give a shit.

It reminds him of how he was a year ago and it throws him for a loop. Was Quinn attracted to that and just grew out of it when he grew up?

From Noah Puckerman:
You did really good.

From Quinn:
Thanks - I had fun. But I know I definitely won’t get a solo for Regionals.

From Noah Puckerman:
Well I won’t either, so.

From Quinn:
Things will go back to normal and Mr. Schue won’t bother showcasing us anymore.

From Noah Puckerman:
It was good while it lasted.

From Quinn:
Death of variety, a moment of silence.

From Noah Puckerman:
Na, na, na, na, hey, hey, hey, goodbye.

Puck knows that if Quinn weren’t so against sending just emoticons, she definitely would send a smiley face or a laughing face.

From Quinn:
I can’t believe you hooked up with Berry.

From Noah Puckerman:
Hey, she attacked me! She would’ve slept with me if I didn’t push her away.

From Quinn:
Now I have a disturbing mental image of her lunging at you.

From Noah Puckerman:
I’m sure what you’re imagining is not nearly as bad as what it was.

From Quinn:
Oh don’t even go there - you like her - you ADMITTED it in the green room!

From Noah Puckerman:
Yeah, but I would never do anything serious with her. We’re kindred spirits.

From Quinn:
So you wouldn’t do anything serious with her but you would with me. Because you care more about me? Makes a lot of sense.

A few seconds after Quinn sends her last text, angry and embarrassed, her phone starts to ring. She waits a few seconds to answer it.

“What?” she asks flatly.

“Don’t even go there,” he repeats back to her, pissed off, “You know how I feel about you. You have no right, especially with Evans hanging off your arm.”

She closes her eyes and breathes, knowing he’s right but she has too much pride to admit it.

He sighs frustratingly. “You’re unbelievable.”

She continues not to say anything.

“You know the only time you were ever completely satisfied was when you were with me, right?”

“I’m getting there with Sam,” she bites out, “We just started being a couple.”

“Whatever. It’s your choice. I agreed to that, right?”

“Yeah, you did.”

They stay on the phone for a while even though they’re both not talking.

“I’ve been working on a song for a little while. Do you want to come over and hear it?”

She nods before remembering that they’re not in the same room. “Sure.”

He sings a quiet rendition of “Go Your Own Way” with his acoustic, which ends up turning into a duet; they somehow manage to divide the verses perfectly. It would probably be a really great number to perform for glee club, but this is just for them, hoping to gain some closure.

(Even after they finish playing, they can’t feel it).
