Because Heathcliff is an arsehole, and Mr Rochester...well...Anonymous Commenter has this to say about him: To be fair, Jane Eyre does kind of insist that Rochester stops acting like a douche before uniting with him in married bliss. In order to achieve this, though, he does have to go blind. Got to love Victorian morality tales. So, yeah.
