MHA -1, Tuesday Evening

Folding laundry was a thrilling task. Since there was no avoiding it, he'd gotten out his headset and called Rodney to entertain him through the process. As always, it was a good choice. Rodney barely required John to participate in the conversation while he complained about his underlings being infantile sycophants who couldn't find the laces ( Read more... )

Jaina was planning on going to Caritas tonight, but ended up stopping just outside and looking across the street at the apartments. Stopping here might look slightly stalkery, but it wasn't like she didn't have anything to talk to him about, and it saved her a phone call. So she headed in, found the apartment (it'd been a while) and knocked on the door.

Hearing a knock on the door, John hadn't even bothered to interrupt Rodney's current rant with more than an, "Uh huh," as he dropped his laundry and crossed to pull the door open.

"...hey." So not expected, this.

"Hi," she said, not noticing the earpierce at first. "I was headed across the street, figured I'd stop by."

Of course, the problem with being on the phone with Rodney was getting off again. "Listen, I'm gonna have to call you back." He lifted his hand to beckon Jaina in as he moved aside. "Yes, that exactly, Rodney." John's mouth gaped in annoyance as he failed to actually hang up, his eyes rolling around as he made faces for Jaina's benefit. "Well, maybe you should work on your people skills if you want women showing up to your apartment this late. Bye!"

Trying to keep the smile away while watching him make faces on the phone was pretty much impossible, and once she was inside and he'd said goodbye, she started with, "Sorry, didn't mean to interrupt phone time."

"No, what you interrupted was laundry time," he said, shutting the door and ushering her into the living area where the pile of folded clothes was rather obvious. "So, to what do I owe this visit?"

"I checked things over on the StealthX, everything looks good and it's ready to go whenever you're ready to take it out. I figured since I was in the area I'd just tell you in person," she explained. "Probably not a long enough message to interrupt laundry time."

"And here I thought you just missed me already," John teased with a smirk. "Come, sit, talk stealth things with me so I don't have to call Rodney back."

"Well, I didn't want to be obvious about it," teased back, looking for where to sit. "I'm guessing he's a talker?"

"Rodney?" John let out a long breath as he shoved laundry aside so she could sit on the sofa. Since he still had no furniture. "Oh yeah. Most of the time I don't think I'm required for the conversation."

Jaina sat, swallowing her offer to help fold. At one point in time she would have just done it, but that'd be weird now. "Well next time you talk to him, tell him I'm sorry for demanding your attention and getting him kicked off the phone," she said.

That was so not what he'd tell Rodney but John agreed with a nod anyway as he worked diligently to fold up the last of his shirts so things would be taken care of and neat. "Demand away, if I don't complain he's certainly not allowed to."

"Of course you don't complain, you know I'd complain back," she said with the hint of a lopsided grin.

"Oh yeah?" Really that was a level of flirting he didn't expect from her 'stopping by' when there were not supposed to be any booty calls in his present or future. "Maybe I should change my tune. You know, just to see how you deal."

"Meaning you want to see me flail," she guessed. Maybe she was flirting. To this day she couldn't manage it successfully if she tried, but it kind of just happened when she talked to him.

"Now you deal by flailing?" John asked. "Now this is worth seeing. How dare you come here." He said the last bit dramatically and then watched for reaction with an amused look.
