Just don’t drop the baby

‘Get this fucking thing out of me!’

The scream reverberated through the hospital corridor, Claire and Ray glancing at each other with wide eyes.

‘Fuck, dude,’ he muttered with an exaggerated shudder. ‘It sounds like she’s being ripped apart in there.’

‘Jeeeeeeeeeesus!’

Claire nodded in agreement. ‘It’s like in the last Twilight book, where Bella is pregnant and the baby is like tearing her up from the inside and breaking her bones and things.’

‘Man, I bet its some real ‘Alien’ shit, y’know. I bet its fucking exploding out her chest and devouring the doctors.’ The two fell quiet, staring ahead of them. Another scream ripped through the corridor and Claire looked across at the closed doors. Behind them, her best friend was giving birth.

‘I am never having children. I’m not having any aliens exploding out of me.’

‘We’ll adopt,’ agreed Ray, also glancing at the door and swallowing nervously. ‘I wonder how Walt’s doing.’

‘If he hasn’t been eaten yet,’ she replied, reaching out, as Lola yelled obscenities from inside the room, to take his hand. Ray squeezed it.

‘We’ll give them a good funeral,’ he said solemnly.

‘If we can find all the pieces,’ she said, voice low. She suddenly looked at him. ‘Shit, Ray! We’re the godparents. If that thing eats Walt and Lola, we’ll be its legal guardians. We’d have to look after it. We’d get eaten too!’

‘Shit! Look, if we get a chance, we’ll have to tell them that we kindly decline their offer of guardianship.’ Claire nodded, listening to another scream and a sudden wail.

‘We could make a run for it now?’ she whispered. Ray peeked at the ward doors, before peering towards the fire exit.

‘Let’s escape while we can.’ They got to their feet, holding tightly onto each others hands before creeping away from the chairs. They hadn’t gone a couple of steps, before the doors opened and Walt appeared. He was dressed in a blue gown, a huge grin plastered on his face. His eyes were bright and he looked dazed.

‘I’m a dad,’ he murmured. ‘It’s a girl. A baby girl.’

‘Dude, has it eaten anyone yet?’ Ray asked cautiously.

‘Fuck, I’m a dad.’ Walt gave a laugh as it finally sunk in for the three of them  Claire squealed and leapt forward to wrap her arms around his neck and kiss his cheek.

‘Oh, Walt!’ she laughed, tearfully. Ray grinned and punched his shoulder, before the blond led them both in.

Lola was laid on the bed, dark hair stuck to her face with a weary expression. Laid small, pink and wrinkly against her chest was a tiny baby, a pink towel draped over her. ‘Oh, my God,’ whispered Claire, coming forward to hug Lola, who gave her a weak smile in return. ‘She’s tiny!’

‘Hey, at least it doesn’t look like that baby from Men in Black,’ said Ray, thoughtfully. You know, the one who spews over Will Smith.’

‘She’s not an ‘it’, Ray,’ smiled Lola, eyes on the small baby. A sudden devious grin came to Ray’s face.

‘Shit, dude. You have a bucket now! Walt, you won’t be able to feel the sides!’ He laughed loudly and jumped out the way when both Claire and Lola went to hit him. He bounced forward again, squeezing Walt’s shoulder. ‘No, I’m just joking, dude. I’m proud of you. Really.’

‘What’s her name?’ Claire asked, stroking the back of the baby’s small, pink hand.

‘Alex,’ smiled Walt, eyes never leaving Lola and his daughter. Shifting, Lola propped herself up, before lifting Alex up. She tucked the blanket around the small, fragile form. Alex had her eyes squeezed shut, nose wrinkled as she began to wail. Lola handed her up to Walt, who nervously cradled her against his chest.

‘Shit,’ murmured Ray in disbelief as he peered over Walt’s shoulder. The blond rocked her gently, murmuring words of comfort. Alex stopped crying and opened her big, blue eyes. She gazed blearily up at him, limp and unsteady in his arms. It was quiet for a moment as they all watched the tiny newborn.

Lola rested back against the pillows, tired green eyes falling shut. Claire brushed her hair out her eyes and grinned. ‘You’re a mom!’ she laughed in an American accent. ‘It’s just… amazing. I can’t believe it!’ Lola opened her eyes and smiled.

‘I can’t believe it either.’ She glanced back at Walt and Alex, her heart swelling with an unconditional love.
