We need to order a new laptop at work. MIS has suggested a Sony. The "item" on the quote say it's a S270 NB PM1600 512MB 60GB CDRW/DVD 13.3IN WXGA WXPP ( Read more... )

512MB is the amount of RAM the system has. This is an OK amount, but if I were buying a new laptop now, I would get 1 GB.
60 GB is the hard drive. That's a fine size.
WXGA is the video resolution, which is fine.
WXPP is Windows XP Professional - the OS, which is also fine.

Laptops are expensive - the model we purchase here (with has a 14.1 inch monitor, and 1 GB of ram) runs us $2200 - and we're an educational institution.

RAM is what people usually mean when they say “memory”; it’s memory for holding running programs and their data. It doesn’t keep its information when the computer is shut down (although in a laptop it will keep its information when the laptop is asleep). It’s distinct from disk space, which is almost never what people mean when they say “memory” although some people refer to disk space as memory sometimes in specific technical contexts. Disk space is permanent storage; what’s on your disk won’t go away when you shut down the computer (unlesss you’re very unlucky, as zzbottom was ( ... )
