Music Post!

Jul 14, 2008 04:33

My sleep cycle is all out of whack once again, so I'm awake at 4:30 in the morning for no damn reason at all.

At 4:30am, there's really only two things you can do online: download porn or download music. Tossed a coin. Music won.

So I'm going to share some of my recent musical discoveries.
I go for quality over quantity when it comes to music, so I don't find new songs often.
According to iTunes, I've only added 60 songs to my library in the last 4 months and it's only that high because I got both the Coldplay and N.E.R.D. albums, which have about a dozen songs each.

Onto the music--

I'm apologizing in advanced just in case any of these auto-play. They shouldn't but you never know =/

Zero 7
Zero 7 is pretty much my favorite musical group at the moment. If you like Feist, Psapp, Massive Attack or Goldfrapp, chances are you'll like Zero 7.
My favorite song of all time is 'Destiny'. 4 years I've been listening to this song and I'm still not tired of it.

"Destiny"
(you can hear the full versions of all the imeem songs by clicking the two squares in the top right corner of the playlist)

I was not a fan of their most recent album, The Garden.

Most of the cuts were retro, lounge-y tracks reminiscent of 60s pop music. It was such a huge departure from their previous stuff that I couldn't really appreciate it.
I recently gave it another listen and have discovered some pretty amazing songs on this album. I'm ashamed I didn't give it a fair shot:

Oren Lavie
I discovered Oren Lavie a couple months ago via this car commercial. His music also has that chilled-out 60s retro vibe, but his sound is more mellow than Zero 7's.

"Her Morning Elegance" (the song in the commercial)

"A Dream Within A Dream" - My favorite song on his album. It's not a song I'd normally go for, but it has this beautifully haunting, almost mournful quality to it:

RJD2
I discovered this artist because I'm now obsessed with Mad Men. While I was watching all 13 episodes in 2 days, I fell in love with the theme song which was made by RJD2. He's a hip-hop DJ/beat maker/producer. Kind of like Mark Ronson before he became a pretentious hipster cradle-robber (uh-oh. Now I'm going to get jumped by some crazed ONTD members).

"A Beautiful Mine" - The Mad Men theme song. It fit so perfectly with the opening credits that I had no idea it was an actual song until I saw it on Mad Men's wikipedia entry.

"Ghostwriter" - a funky, hip-hop instrumental. It's also been used in a bunch t.v. shows and commercials.

"Chicken-Bone Circuit" - There's no mistaking that this is a hip-hop song, but it manages to transcend that label by including saxophone riffs, piano chords and a hardcore drum solo.

MGMT
"Electric Feel" - I don't even know. I'm not big into 80s music, so I can't explain why I like this song so much. I just do. I guess I'm a sucker for a syncopated beat, no matter what it sounds like.

N.E.R.D.

N.E.R.D. and Coldplay are the only albums I've been looking forward to this year.
I've been listening to Seeing Sounds non-stop since I got the leaked album in early June (boo for slow leaks), so it's not technically a "new" discovery, but this album is banging, so whatever.

My favorite songs from Seeing Sounds

Okie, that's all I got.

Hopefully I've introduced the 3 people who pay attention to my journal to some rad tunes today.
