I learned yesterday that a good man fell whilst in the line of duty as a soldier of transport in the ongoing war between the United States and Afghanistan. Playing in the background at a party, I caught a flash of the local news. The Newsblurb said he had died at the hospital after suffering injuries from an enemy attack, that he had been awarded two bronze stars and a purple medal. He leaves behind his wife of four years and his two children, a boy and a girl.
I mourn the loss of a very tender-hearted, kind and insightful person today. I remember Andy being a man of great faith. He had a perspective that he drew from his humble, poor beginnings in Brownsville, TX. He was so very thoughtful, never complained; Andy always wore a smile that could light a room. He was a good person and one who was very kind to the ones he loved. It is unfortunate and I needed to spell this out because I feel the loss today. I feel sad for his widowed wife and his children who have now been made fatherless. I bet he was a great dad.
I read somewhere that in certain cultures (of African origins, I believe), the community comes together to gather food, prepare meals, and do other active and supportive actions for the family who has lost a member. My heart reaches out to Andy's wife and I really wish I could give her the household and everyday support in this great time of need. If only we lived in the same city! I hope that she is able to come to a place of peace with this tragedy. I know that the children he has left behind will be remarkable because Andy's light lives on within them.

Rest in peace, old friend. I know you look down on us all from heaven.
