Well here I am.. New York City. I`m officially 7 days into my 6 week journey. My little dorm (room 811) is lovely and conveniently located in Union Square. Esa & I were blessed and given the "large room" aka the handicap room. Why a handicap room would be located on the 8th floor is beyond me (god forbid a fire breaks loose). We also have a rail in the shower, which is actually good, consideirng that me falling in the shower wouldn't be something different. So far it seems that I am the only person in downtown New York to wear a touch of pink every day. Black, grey or brown are the colors of choice here. Like Isabel says, "Either Floridians have a little bit of Barbie in them, or the use of dark dismal colors around here are a subconcious, desperate cry for help". The "cool" thing around here is to walk really fast, sunglasses on, serious look on your face, I-pod in your ears, and to dress "poor" (meaning unbrushed hair, dirty dingy shirts, and boots). I thought that I was an eccentric dresser until I arrived here and saw a man dressed like Spider Man riding a bike through Times Sqaure.
Everything we need is right around us. We have a Walgreens, Virgin Records, Starbucks, Barnes and Noble.. everything else is within just a few blocks. I found a rockin little vintage store that I absolutely adore. My new favorite things are my gold elephant hat and the T-shirt that reads "Life begins after 40!" A Mister Softee truck sits outside on the corner and the ice cream rocks my world (and its only $2). Its like being 5 and waiting for the ice cream man.. except.. I don't have to wait for this guy. He's always there.
The walk to class takes me about 15 minutes, but that walk is my favorite part of the day. Since I almost got hit by a taxi 3 days ago, while everyone on both corners laughed, I am now very cautious when I cross the street. Lord knows, those taxi cab drivers will not stop. "Time is money!".
My class is great. My teacher is a sweet older man who used to be the head writer for Good Morning America. After the first week I feel that I have indeed learned a great deal. I was scared that I was going to be the dumb Florida blonde, but it turns out that my writing skills are very much up to par.
The subway scares me. Its dirty and everyone looks at me funny because I use a antibacterial wipe or a jacket to hold onto the subway bar. Isabel, Dana and I had a successful trip to Chinatown though. We made it back in one piece which was great. No one talks on the subway. Its hard to tell who is friendly and who just wants to murder you. Maybe thats why people are quiet.
I am excited to experience more and more. 5 more weeks to go! Wooo.
