Well, I've spent every goddamn cent I had on my new art studio/gallery. Not the best move I've ever made financially, but hey, what are ya gonna do?
I'm excited and scared and broke and excited. And also excited. It's an old building, smells wet for some reason. 450+ square feet of dust and mess and it's all mine. The walls are teal, which will not work for me, but everything else is perfect. PERFECT! I have a heavy metal door that slides like a meat locker, an office space and my own bathroom to pee in.
This weekend I hope to paint the walls (if anyone wants to help, and likes painting walls) and move some paintings and supplies in to make room in my house. Also I am going to get a file cabinet to be organized. This is probably unnecessary, but I like lists and have always wanted a file cabinet.
And so my plans are:
1. Have a showing every First Friday and Third Thursday.
2. Try to be available and open on weekends.
3. While I'm there on weekends, paint BIG now that I will finally have space!
4. Get a membership/volunteer group together to raise money to keep the damn thing open, have group shows and meeting with cookies and punch and a clipboard of notes.
5. Keep the studio open and available to other artists and good ideas.
That's the gist of it I guess. I also need some things if anyone knows where I can get them for cheap or better yet, free:
A table, some folding chairs, an armoire or vanity (to lay flyers, cards, etc. and use as a bulletin board), track lighting, and other little things like house paint, paint rollers & trays, drop cloth and painter's tape, tag board or poster board, screenprinting ink, oh and money.
So there we go. Wish me luck.
