The Great Halloween Costume Debate

When I was a kid, store-bought Halloween costumes were cheap. They consisted of a thin, plastic mask that covered the front of your face, with an easily breakable elastic band to hold it place, plus some sort of tunic that tied in the back which meant you clearly had to wear street clothes underneath.

I remember very clearly going to Woolworth's to buy Halloween candy and desperately wanting one of those costumes. Specifically, the Wonder Woman one. But no, my mother made homemade costumes. One year, I was a flapper (using an old dress of hers that she no longer fit into, complete with wig). Another year, I was a gypsy, again using old scarves, wigs, and her own makeup. Still another year, she went all out and sewed a Raggedy-Ann costume, completed with a dyed-red mop for my hair. It was not until I became a mom that I really appreciated how much effort she put into those costumes.

In the meantime, store-bought costumes have come a long way and I have not hesitated to buy costumes for my son throughout the years. I've always thought they were far better done than anything I could have come up with. But now, I'm facing what is very probably the last Halloween that my son will dress up and go trick-or-treating and I'm a little nostalgic for homemade costumes.

What was your favorite Halloween costume (homemade or store-bought)?
