"Trying to figure out which one is which/and what and where is home"

I just re-watched Naked, by Mike Leigh, for the first time in years, in aid of my current David Thewlis kick. (I'd have watched it sooner, but try finding a copy of it on DVD that doesn't cost the earth.) I think I was too young for it the first time around - I felt like I'd had the wind knocked out of me when it ended, but I didn't know why. Now I ( Read more... )

So, is your mainlining Thewlis a result of your fandom secret # 4 or is fandom secret # 4 due to your mainlining Thewlis?

I'm not sure I've seen 'Naked' all the way through but I've seen bits (I think). Yeah, he'd be a pretty serious bad boyfriend and I'd hope I'd run a mile but I do have a soft spot for the fucked up ones.

A bit of both, I think. 'Naked' is one of those movies I've been keeping my eye out for on DVD for a while - mostly because it's one of those movies I just can't seem to shake off. Also, I finally got around to reading 'The Late Hector Kipling', which I really enjoyed. It's nasty and funny and smart-arsed and the overall impression you get from it is of how really insanely intelligent Thewlis is. And both of those combined with my fixation on DW led to fandom secret #4...
'Naked' is definitely worth seeing - it's brutal in parts, but the performances are terrific - both Katrin Cartlidge and Lesley Sharp are so totally believable and watching Thewlis is like watching a car crash, horrifying and fascinating and strangely magnetic. It's not without humour, either - there's a lot of really great one-liners. And I'll stop burbling now, and go away...

I didn't know he'd written a book. I must go find. I don't know about you but I was always waiting for him to go completely nuts in the Potter movies (apart from the turning into a werewolf obviously) but he played it pretty cuddly. Was that his point do you think? To have you sitting on the edge of your seat waiting for him to explode, until you start to feel a little sick in the belly? Same as Oldman, although he got to be a little nutjob-y. It's kind of like watching Joe Pesci; you know he's going to meltdown; you just don't know what's going to set him off.

I do love me some Lesley Sharp too. I think I'll go back to youTube and watch it all the way through.

Yes! I'm hoping to work it into my dissertation somewhere just to have an excuse to watch it again. It has one of my all-time favourite movie music moments when the paramilitaries assemble to The Magnificent Seven soundtrack; it's so totally absurd and funny but tells you everything about exactly how groups like that can be viewed in terms of cultural mythos...And it's just really funny in a sick sort of way.
