With the chilly weather here in the PacNW, my sister's dog, Marshmallow, was in need of a coat. If you have pets or have been to a pet store, you might have noticed how ridiculously overpriced and poorly made dog clothes are. I thought I could do a better job, and I think I did. :) The coat is made with wool coat remnants that I got from the Pendleton outlet back in September, and I used
Butterick pattern 4885 (view C). I finished this coat about a week ago, but the weather was finally good enough, and I was finally feeling well enough after being sick to where we could take pics.
Yes, he is very fluffy. He is in desperate need of a grooming, and I think that the coat will fit a bit better once he's had some of that fur trimmed away.
This was also my first time using fake fur and velcro, both of which were interesting to work with, especially when you mostly sew period clothing! I am trying to become a better seamstress, especially by stretching myself to go outside of my comfort zone and use materials that I never have used before.
The buttons are interesting, to say the least. Me and Marta spent at least an hour in the button aisle at Joann's debating which buttons to get. I found the perfect buttons, that looked exactly like the buttons on the pattern envelope (like a faux-leather with a cross), but Marta didn't like them, and she wanted something with sparkles, even though he's a boy dog (although a lot of people think he's a girl. It's really funny.) We finally found something that we could compromise on and that I could live with. Plus, I had a gift card, so I didn't have to pay for them in the long run. ;)
The tabs on the coat fasten at his belly and at his neck with the velcro, and the tabs are both lined with fake fur (that was fun to sew. Not.) Yes, he has a very fluffy belly!
Anyways, I've been doing a ton of sewing during break, and I promise I will post more about those projects during the next couple of days. Right now, I'm working on starting an Etsy, doing new volunteer work, and changing my rooming situation. Life has been busy.
