Spring Break Happenings and Sewing

Spring Break began yesterday and with it came more energy to sew. The main thing I've been working on has been my quilted petticoat (you can read more about it here). I started the petticoat back in October in the hopes of being able to wear it to some of my winter events, but I never finished it in time. Originally, I was going to completely hand sew it (including hand quilting all of the 44 rows that I planned), but I got bored after the fourth row of quilting. So, I decided to machine quilt it, and I'm glad that I did: the sewing went so much faster (surprising, I know) and it gave me more motivation to actually finish it. I did finish all of the quilting on it yesterday, as well as sewing the side seam together. All that's left is to finish off the raw edge on the bottom, gather it, and attach a waistband.

My plan up to 2 days ago was to wear this to the Living History day on the 25th. However, something strange and unexpected happened today: it got up to 73 degrees. I know Washington weather is totally bipolar and that expecting unpredictable weather is to be expected, but it's shocking that it got that warm. Now I'm actually hoping for cloudy (or at least cold) wether so that I can wear this thing.

So, since the weather was so nice, I decided that I should probably start working on my sheer summer dress and I cut/ripped out the skirt panels for it. It's going to be made out of a white windowpane fabric that looks a lot like this fabric, and that I got on sale for $5 (and is actually truly sheer, unlike the "lawn" that I made into a sheer dress last year).

For design, I'm thinking something like this:

(I've always liked the dress on the cover of the book. Thanks to
miss_lottiegirl  for telling me about the book and letting me borrow it!)

I love the ruching on the sleeves on the one above. I'm still working out the details for the bodice and the sleeves, and I'm thinking something along the lines of the Past Patterns Sheer Dess pattern.
