As is often my wont to do when I get so much as a sniffle I stayed home from work today. I had been feeling crummy last night and when I woke up at 5 this morning to get ready for work I had the WORST sore throat ever. I mean, I felt like I couldn't even swallow it was so bad. I tried to tell the cat about it and found that my voice was somewhat less than useful, so I said, "fuck this," and went back to bed (not before calling my boss to let him know I was damn near useless to him). I slept from then until about 10:30 when I went downstairs and scared the crap out of James who had no idea I was still in the house.
Now, after drinking lots of tea and gargling salt water my throat feels all right again. I can swallow, my voice has come back, and generally things are all right. I'm not sure why I thought it was a good idea to skip out on work, but the extra sleep was definitely appreciated. If all goes as planned I should be able to go back tomorrow and be hunky dory.
It's just hard to tell exactly how sick you are at 5 in the morning, you know?
I also found something very interesting today whilst I was randomly surfing around the net, and it made me at the same time frightened and intruiged. Sherlock Holmes slash. At first I was like, "AHHHH!!!" and then I calmed down a little bit and thought, "Why would people think that about he and Watson?" So, like a good little detective, I investigated. What I found, while it didn't make any sense to me, at least helped me understand the perspective of the author(s). I think most of these homosexual erotica writers (now this is just my opinon, as Poodlebum can tell you I support some pretty weird fandoms myself) have kind of misplaced Holmes's misogynistic tendencies and transformed them into a fervent desire for his sidekick. Now, people have been doing this with heroes and sidekicks, I believe, since the dawn of time (think Batman and Robin) so it's nothing new, it just seemed to me wildly out of place in the Sherlock Holmes world. For one thing, we all know that Watson loves the ladies. I mean, he's had women on three continents, hasn't he? And he has often been seen to remark that he has a particular fondness for a 'well-turned ankle'. Therefore, I would remark that he is not gay since he pretty much told us so with his various marriages. As for Holmes...who knows. I'm pretty sure he's asexual and replaces human affection/sexual satisfaction with a good ol' hit of cocaine and happy mystery to chase after.
Anywho, it just struck me as a little off-kilter so I thought I would ramble about it here. I'm not shy about this kind of stuff, I just want to try and understand the reasoning behind reaching such a conclusion. Perhaps I shall go try and find some Holmes/Watson manifestos on google...
Isn't it nice to know I'm doing something productive with my day off?
