I have witnessed history!
Well, not really, unless you consider Kenya winning everything 'history'. But I did go to the Commonwealth Games athletics with my parents last night. I can tell you that the athletes looked like ants from our seats; that we saw the hammer throw, the steeplechase, the long jump, pole vault and other long distancey race things; and that there was about fifteen million victory ceremonies. I cannot tell you the words to Jamaican national anthem, though I think I have Kenya's memorised by now. And BTW people, what's Englands national anthem? "God Save Us From The Queen", perhaps?
Anyhoo,
thefridayfive:
1) Of the various cultures, ethnicities or nationalities you belong to, which most strongly do you consider yourself?
Probably German. Before my grandad moved back there, he taught me a lot about the culture and I've always felt very German, and connected to their culture and country.
2) Is there a culture you cannot claim heritage from but which you feel quite close to?
Not sure. I feel a little close to the Greek culture, cause my uncle is Greek/British and I've learned a lot about it over the years, but I wouldn't say I was connected to it.
3) What's one language you wish you knew fluently?
It would be a lot easier in language class if I knew my German fluently by now, but probably Spanish. I've always been fascinated by Spain and South America, and I've always wanted to learn it.
4) If you could move anywhere in the world and be guaranteed a job, etc., where would you go?
Oh, so many places. I would love to go to the US and live in California or New York, all those places people who aren't American want to go. Obviously Spain or South America. Canada, as well - Kingston. Hawaii! Like I said, so many places.
5) If you had a time machine, and could witness any one event without altering or disturbing it, what would you want to see?
GOSH. Someone mentioned the building of the Easter Island statues - that would be incredible. Also just to go back and see the Victorian era and how it really was, not how it tends to be depicted today.
Best site ever, you guys - some 20 yr old chick rereading all her Babysitter's Club books and
commenting on them. WINS AT LIFE. Srsly.
Anyway, there's some new stock icons in my icon journal if y'all care, and some more Lost icons will be in there very soon. School is back on Monday, and I'll have a lot of SACs over the next week (blah), but not too long until Easter break, so that's good. It's always fun going to every store in the universe trying to find eggs for my dad at Easter. Sugarless low-carb diabetic chocolate, anyone?
EDIT:
Yeah, okay, the Girlfriend site got me thinking, so here's me being all opinionative on last week's ep:
OK, firstly, I love how the kids in this show never think things through. I mean, srsly, every episode these kids are doing something ridiculous on a nonsensical whim. A few weeks we had Ryan becoming a fisherman, last week we had Kristin throwing a benefit on a day's notice, and this week, we have Marissa giving up on college because she just can't write about the damn shooting. I mean, dude. She can't just put down that she was "charged with a felony for which I was not prosecuted or penalised due to exigent circumstances"? Or "I was involved in an assault, during which I inflicted a minor wound on my attacker in self defence" or even "I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die"? Cause really, giving up your entire future because you could come up with a smart way to say "I shot a dude who was a jerkwad" is not so smart to me. But then again, let us be honest, Marissa isn't very smart, at all. *g*
Oh, and also, people in the County like to hurl things when they're angry. And why has Marissa's internet connected, ten thousand dollar laptop not been repossessed already? And is she still living at Summer's or what, and in which case, does she even have the right to trash the room in flashback anger? I don't get it.
OK, so Julie's in a trailer park now, which makes me grin like *g* cause she so deserves it by now. What I don't get it why Kristin is going into business with her cause hello, they're both BROKE. Dude, srsly. Also, I think I said this in my Lost recap, don't go into business with a scamming compulsive liar who tried to con you, Kristin. Or something like that.
OH NOES. JONNY'S DED. Except he isn't rly. What a downer, cause I so wanted him to die. We need another big death, cause no one's died since Caleb, and seriously, did anyone care about Caleb anyway? I sure didn't. It's funny how the guy who hit Johnny plays absolutely no part in anything despite the fact Johnny could be in a wheelchair, don't you think? So Johnny's lying around in hospital, and he has no parents or guardians cause no one's there at all, and Marissa is very pretty in these scenes, and I remember that cause all she was wearing was a grey jumper and had her hair tied back and still looked like a supermodel. Oh yeah, Johnny gives this touching speech about how he's going to go through rehab (good thing Kristin’s not there to hear physiotherapy likened to alcoholism, or she'd have run off with the medicinal spirits) and get back on his board (yeah, that's not a innuendo) cause he can't just quit, and apparently all Marissa needed to hear to change her entire philosophy on her future was "things happen, don't quit". Which Ryan could easily have said, but can't, because all I have to say to make him a hypocrite if he were to say it is "fisherman". (God, that was ridiculous episode.)
Also, as the girlfriend site brings up, I dunno why Ryan is going all prep school on Marissa's ass trying to get her to enrol in college when a)he has no prospects himself, b)he quit school a few episodes back and only got back into Harbour cause the Dean was a pervert, and c)FISHERMAN, ANYONE? Also funny that Marissa was all prep-school on HIS ass, at that time.
Speaking of the Dean - so he gets transferred for having an affair with a student (which BTW is a laughably woeful penalty, a mere transfer) but Taylor gets off scot free? So you can't shoot someone in self defence, but you can screw your teachers and not get a detention? Um. Ok. Sure, that.
Now that we're on the topic of Tay, let's move onto the whole Seth/Summer thing for a second. Now for those who missed the memo - Seth has deep self loathing, or maybe just sunshine loathing, issues, both of which tie into him being an emokid, and longs to escape to the never-see-sunshine state of wherever-it-is to go to Brown (I'm thinking Colorado. The Rockies. Actually, wait I'll google it, like the teeny I am - Rhode Island? WTF? It's not cold in Rhode Island. It's like next to NY and NY is temperate? Asses trying to screw up our little brains with incorrect informa-) AHEM, thank you, braingoogle. Anyway, to sum it up, Rhode Island is not cold enough for ski hats, but anyway again, Summer also has deep self loathing issues, which might ruin her complexion there, because she thinks Seth will meet many smart people at the shmrt peeps skool w/da grls n da bewks!!! Oh yeah, and Taylor's a bitch again, and Summer's just like 'take it all, bitch' and Taylor does, for a while, until she realizes she has a lonely lonely ass. And thus decides to tell Summer about all these really cool colleges near Seth's.
And I'll butt in here for a moment (hang on, I can't butt into my OWN RECAP ROFL) and say that Summer’s final decision really annoyed me. I guess it came down to a moral decision of whether the love of your life or your further education and the rest of YOUR life is more important (though for Summer it was probably more like leave Seth, near Taylor or be with Seth, near Taylor, and piss her off). Personally, I can say now that I was pick my future, hands down, but then again, I'm not in love. With an emokid who likes the cold and hates his hometown, that is.
Anyhoo, in the end, Summer compromises and decides to go to someplace with Seth, and together, they can freeze and write songs about their self loathing and matching sweaters. By the way here, I love how these four kids are not only deciding where to go to college in the 8th episode of the season's run (meaning they are barely 2 months into the US school year and haven't even hit the halfway mark of Christmas break yet, or Thanksgiving, even) but all act as if once they decide where they're going, that's it. Like the school will automatically accept them and all shall be grand. Maybe that's what they're playing at with Ryan and Marissa deciding to go to Berkeley in the same state, so that Seth and Summer will have their icebox school reject their applications and end up going to Berkeley instead and all four will be together for a prosperous and far simpler season four. Although, Seth having the intelligence of all three of his friends combined, it seems unlikely he'll lower himself to the depths of a school that takes in Ryan, the owner of the County Minor Assault Record, and Marissa, the World's Sexiest Man-Shooter. As for Summer, bah, what's she studying, fashion design?
I'm sorry. I'm very critical tonight. Or maybe just about this show.
Uh, yeah. That's about it. I might do one of these for Tuesday's ep.
BYE.
