Stephanie Brown is going places.
She’s already twelve credits into a fast-track degree program that’ll set her up working at Wayne Enterprises the moment that she graduates. Her best friend Kara is her roommate and they do everything together already so college is going to be amazing. She’s already wrangled an invite to the best business sorority in town and her part-time job at the campus bookstore has already gotten her a nice chunk of change.
Everything is going according to schedule until she walks in.
She’s seen Cassandra around the hall before as she and her mom helped the Kents bring all of Kara’s clothes and shoes and computer equipment up to the fourth floor when the elevators crapped out on them. The older girl is quiet and she’s the only freshman to have a single room on their floor.
Rumor has it that she’s tied to Bruce Wayne and his ridiculously wealthy family so Stephanie is expecting someone tall and confident that’ll be a pain in the ass to deal with. Instead, she gets a short girl that walks into the lounge on their floor dressed in a pair of baggy blue sweats and a black hoodie that is much too large for her tiny frame.
The lounge is already pretty packed by the time that Cassandra gets there and the only spaces in the room are next to the door on the other side and a seat on the couch between Steph and Kara.
“Come over here,” Kara calls out in a loud voice as she waves at the tiny girl with a wide smile on her face. “You can sit with us!”
Cassandra points at herself as if to ask Kara “Are you talking to me?” and the look on her face is such a painfully familiar mix of hope and loneliness that Steph gets in on it as well, patting the seat cushion and smiling welcomingly at her fellow freshman.
Once Cassandra is sitting down between them, Kara starts talking a mile a minute.
“I’m Kara Kent and this is my BFF, Steph. We live in 422 across from those cute little freshman boys that were so loud Friday night. You must be Cassandra.” At the look of confusion on the other girl’s face, Kara is quick to explain. “You’re the only girl that hadn’t signed in. It wasn’t a very hard leap to make-”
Steph cuts in and holds out her hand for Cassandra to shake. “You’ll get used to Kara,” she says as she smiles at Cassandra. “It’s nice to meet you, Cass. You um... don’t mind if I call you Cass, do you?”
Cassandra’s vigorous headshake and the firm grip of her hand around Steph’s own make the taller blonde smile.
The tiny smile that Cass gives her in return makes Steph have to fight back a blush.
Stephanie Brown is on a fast track to success and just maybe, there’s a chance that she won’t have to go at it alone.
