opening act

I was in the cinema the other day watching the second installment of the PotC trilogy when one of my male friends suddenly told me in a rather irritable voice to "stop swooning" whenever Will Turner or Jack Sparrow appeared on the screen. *snort* As if his eyes didn't grow to the size of footballs every time Miss Swann graced the screen with her presence! *snorts again* Anyway, hence the reason behind my username.

I've been an avid reader of fanfiction for quite some time, but it wasn't until recently that my interest in the phenomenon that is Mary Sue was sparked. A while ago I was reading a fic in the LotR fandom called Time Will Tell. The story was told from an oc's point of view, and I was rather enjoying it, so I was surprised when one day I looked through the reviews for the fic and found a rather nasty comment that someone had left about the blatant Mary Sueishness of the oc. The author of the fic didn't seem to care much about what people thought of her story, however, so she kept on writing it, but the review got me thinking about the concept of Mary Sue, whether the term is always applied fairly in fanfiction reviews, and whether a new or modified definition might be needed. Enter the purpose of this journal.

Apart from reflecting on all things Mary Sue, my aim with this journal is also to improve my revising and editing skills for one of the courses I'm taking at uni. I'm not sure how often I will be able to update, but whenever I do update it will hopefully be with a commentary on whatever fic that is currently the focus of my musings.
