Boosting Self-confidence

Nov 13, 2007 09:00

I was poking around MSN.com when I came across and article titled "Stratagies to boost dating self-confidence". I started to read it and it made some very good points before it launched into talk of God, the bible, and faith. Sorry, it's just not my thing. Here is the part that I did find useful:

Getting to know you…
"Self-worth isn’t determined by what we do, what we look like, or how much success we have had,” says Kathy Cordell, a Wyoming-based life coach. “Instead, it is developed by knowing who we truly are and trusting in that person.” Having faith in the strength within you comes from living a life of integrity, says Cordell. “When the person on the outside matches the person on the inside, you are living an integrated life. If you are insecure about yourself or pretending to be someone you are not to please others, your faith and self-worth can plummet. Being faithful to who you are involves first knowing who you really are and then sticking to the values and guidelines you set for your life.”

Cordell says you can begin to do just that - and reap the self-esteem rewards - by asking yourself these questions:
What are my top 10 values in life?
When I envision my life in 10 years, what do I see?
What do I want most from life?
Whose company do I enjoy?
What makes me laugh?
How do I spend my money?
Which people do I admire most?
What is my purpose?

Answered truthfully, you can learn more about who you are and what you care about. “Once you know more about the positive truth of who you are, a cloud of doubt seems to lift from your life,” Cordell asserts. “You can be more focused while stepping toward your goals as you start to live purposefully. Finding faith in who you are is followed by gaining more understanding of your purpose in life so you can follow the desires of your heart. This may not happen overnight, but when life is pursued step-by-step, the big picture will start to unfold.”

Might as well give it a shot, right?

What are my top 10 values in life?
Honesty, happiness, friendship, family, stability, personal development, health, love, integrity and support.

When I envision my life in 10 years, what do I see?
In 10 years I will be 32. I see myself married with children, living in a location in which I feel comfortable and safe. I will be in a healthy, loving relationship. I will have a close network of friends, and finally a family. I want to continue to work at least part time, or volunteer. I hope that I have gone back to school during this time and have a Bachelor's degree in a field that I enjoy.

What do I want most from life?
Family. Good relationships (friendships or other). Education. Happiness.

Whose company do I enjoy?
Just about everyone's!

What makes me laugh?
A lot of things! I love to laugh and smile. Funny conversations, inside jokes, people watching, my pets, co-workers, friends.

How do I spend my money?
Bills, food, clothing, entertainment, electronics. I need to work on spending money more wisely. I want to have some saved for my future.

Which people do I admire most?
Those that are strong and do not waiver in their opinon easily. People who have morals and stick to them. People that are outgoing, friendly, giving, and caring. People who put other's needs before their own, but know when to stand up for themselves as well.

What is my purpose?
My purpose is to live and learn as I am doing it. To be happy, and make people happy. To make an impact on the lives of others.

Well, there you have it. I don't know if I am feeling much more confident then I did before, but the next time I am feeling down I will come back and read what I just wrote out.
