stuff about stuff

A list of no order or importance:

1) I did not post my usual Days of Awe public seeking of forgiveness, in no small part because I was a complete headless chicken on Tuesday, which I spent a half-hour late to everything, including leaving work to get home in time to eat before heading off to Kol Nidre. I put it off, just as I put off getting more yahrzeit candles, and in the end, I failed to do it at all. I apologized silently before Neilah ended, but with the mental asterisk that I would do so out loud so that it would count. So, if in the course of the (last) year I offended anyone, intentionally or not, I did apologize and I hope that my assumption of your forgiveness was not too presumptuous. Also, happy new year to everyone!

2) RA Dickey is the bright spot on a miserable Mets season. I'm so glad he got to 20 wins and I really, really want him to get the Cy Young. Twenty wins on a team as bad as the Mets and leading the NL in strikeouts while being a knuckleballer is so much more impressive than winning 21 games on a division champion. Dickey's such an interesting dude, literate (as reader and writer), compassionate, and interested in the world for many more reasons than how much money he can make from it.

3) There is no hockey. There will be no hockey. I am too used to this to be disappointed. But I'm still gonna be a little tetchy come October. It's also probably when I'm going to get around to watching all of the series premieres and season premieres on the toob de boob, which should be sufficient time for y'all to figure out what's good or not good and tell me.

4) I don't own a blu-ray DVD player, mostly because it would be wasted on my TV (said TV is older than almost all of you, requires a rabbit ears antenna, and was not intended to connect to anything but a VCR), and I rarely ever mind. But I've seen tumblr gif sets of the DVD commentary for The Avengers and I kind of want a blu-ray player.

5) Comics! Are kind of breaking my heart right now. And my brain. We shall not speak of any movie-inspired events in Winter Soldier (or, rather, we shall not speak of then again, since the conversation with kerithwyn was sufficiently depressing). We could probably speak of the sheet wtf-ery of the Batbooks (Tim is neither Tim nor Robin! Everything happened in five years but Damian's still eleven! And more!), but it wouldn't be pretty. I kind of want to ask Mark Waid how the long-term breakup of Matt and Foggy fits into his stated plan of a peppier, more upbeat, less tragic Daredevil, but the answer won't make sense. aliciam has warned me of the VERY! BAD! PAD! in X-Factor because PAD has had enough of the editorial mandate that he use Havok and is just screwing with him now and it's only going to get worse once Havok becomes leader of the Uncanny Avengers because, gawd, I love Alex but he's not meant to tell Steve Rogers and Thor what to do.

So, instead, I will encourage everyone to read Captain Marvel because of the gorgeous art and really incredible-for-comics Girl Power: a universe full of strong, intelligent, accomplished, interesting, practically dressed women who don't talk about boys all the time, instead choosing to kick ass and see what mountains are still tall enough to be worth scaling (or knocking down). Also, holy poop, someone gave Carol Danvers some agency.

6) There's a DVD commentary meme going around and I kind of thought about it, but it seemed very particular and required a lot of work on your part. So here's a modified version: if you have any questions about any fics past or present, you can Ask Me Anything and I'll answer. I may lie and prevaricate, but I'll answer. :)
