Have you seen the story on your favorite mayor yet? Apparently Bloomberg's seriously looking at doing Perot form the Left in '12, and planning for $1-$3bn war chest.
If he does what he did in NYC -- buying up the unions and the nonprofits with million-dollar "anonymous" donations -- he'd be a threat to the Dems if they put forward a moderate candidate, at least in the sense of him drawing off centrists.
One of the peculiarities of Bloomberg is that he's wildly unpopular in the street. Nobody likes him outside of the Upper West Side; he's reviled in the outer boroughs for his total lack of interest in anything that goes on away from Manhattan. But he spends his money (lots) and political capital (less) to get what he wants. I don't know if he can bully his way to the national stage the way he did locally. He's not Giuliani and, hell, Giuliani's never been successful on the national stage.
