I think it's why I try to include the random and lighthearted moments in the main story. Else you're left with this.

{sad tears} I love how well you're writing in the QH AU, but the whole premise can be heart-breaking. You're too good at this, dear!

The sweet in this draught of bitter: You have everyone doing their utmost in their own particular way and they at least have the dignity of falling in the fight, rather then being trapped away from it.

I understand & grieve with Sam that what would have been dreadful milestones have largely blurred into an exhausted struggle. And yet, she keeps forging on.

And Daniel, trapped away from the front lines and his comrades, but trying to wage war as best he can. I particularly liked this:at least the part where he leads them wandering around in the desert for forty years. {wry grin} May he be blessed by the Blarney Stone!

Now, well, irony's looking a little less doggy.

Is it overly optimistic of me to hope that Daniel will get rescued someday? I suspect so (given the parameters of your QH universe), but I'm hoping anyways.

I honestly don't know what happens to either Sam or Daniel, which is why I was very vague here. They're not dead (yet), but where they are... not sure. So, no, it's not overly optimistic. Just perhaps playing the long odds, depending on what comes first.
