Snow White retraced her steps along the trail until she reached the path where she and the Prince had parted ways. Then she continued on, following in the direction he had taken until she could see the castle grounds in all of their glory. He was lucky to have such a beautiful home, somewhere he could call his own and live out his happily ever after.

Even if it was with a woman he scarcely loved, marrying her simply to settle the financial worries of his father’s kingdom.

She walked along the path that lay parallel to the top of the castle wall, glancing in every window as she passed until her eyes landed on the Prince; James, Charming, whatever he was called, there he was.

She briefly analysed the wall, searching for guards and huntsmen. They appeared to be up at the far end paying little attention to the stretch she was nearest too. Then she stepped backwards before taking a running jump and leaping at the wall. She didn’t quite make it, but caught the brickwork on the top side, where she ended up hanging. She took a long, deep breath and with every bit of strength left in her body, she pulled herself up, swung her legs over and stood firmly on the ground.

The window where James had been stood was vacant. Snow walked along the wall a few feet until she caught sight of him through the next one. She tilted her head to the side and focused her eyes steady on the scene in front of her. Her eyes grew wide and her lips curled up as she saw him pulling his trousers down around his ankles and throwing his shirt across the room.
He disappeared from view again and she walked back to the first window, then to the second. After trying the first window once more she allowed the unexpected disappointment to sink in and turned away from the castle.

‘Like what you see?’

She froze at the sound of his voice, that soft voice she’d grown to enjoy listening to in the hours they’d spent together in the forest. He couldn’t be talking to her, could he? She turned around and, like it or not, he was perched on the window ledge staring at her through the open window.

She smiled ever so slightly. ‘I just happened to be walking past when I saw you.’

‘Walking past along the castle walls?’

‘I,’ she hesitated. ‘I wanted to take you up on that offer.’

‘Which offer?’

‘The jewels. Maybe they could come in handy after all.’

‘That’s not why you came,’ he curled his lips into a smile and raised his eyebrows.

He could guess her intentions all he liked, it didn’t mean he was right. Then again, she was there for another reason, whether she liked to admit it or not.

‘I don’t think you want to marry her,’ she said, allowing her smile to fade.

‘I told you already, I’m doing this to save the kingdom.’

‘That’s not what I said. You don’t love her, do you?’

‘True love doesn’t really exist, you said it yourself, it’s all arranged marriages and business transactions.’

She shrugged her shoulders. ‘Maybe I changed my mind.’

She walked off along the castle walls until he called after her from another window; she turned back and folded her arms. She had nothing left to say to him and she doubted he had anything much to say to her either.

‘Meet me, tonight at midnight.’

‘Why?’

He hesitated. ‘I don’t know. I need to see you again. I want to see you again.’

‘So you chose midnight tonight?’

‘Yes. Meet me on the bridge at the far end of the castle.’

He pointed across the land towards a section of the forest she knew all too well. She continued along the castle walls away from the Prince.

‘Say you’ll come,’ he shouted after her.

‘Maybe,’ she shouted back, climbing up onto the edge of the wall and lowering herself down until only her head was in view of the Prince. ‘Maybe not.’

She jumped down before he could respond and ran off towards the forest.
