Dear Yuletide Writer

Dear Yuletide writer,

first of all, thanks so much for volunteering to write a story in one of these fandoms! I'm thrilled about the possibility of getting fic for one of them. I'd like to stress that optional details are optional, and it's totally fine if you go with your own ideas. But in case it might be useful to know a bit about my preferences, here goes:

I like stories that explore the hidden corners of canon, if you will -- stories that show us things the main source doesn't, whether it's the POV of someone other than the main character, missing scenes, or someone's backstory. I'm a sucker for backstory! I also like futurefic; imagining what happens to my beloved character post-canon has always been a pleasure of mine.

Plot is great, but no must; characterisation is far more important to me. I'm afraid I'm not a big fan of AUs of the vampire/coffee shop/space opera/American high school type. I'm generally more interested in canon-compliant fics, or in AUs that diverge from canon at some crucial point ('What if X had died instead of Y?'). That's of course not to say that canon can't be challenged or expanded somehow, just that I'm mostly interested in stories that explore what's already there, if that makes sense.

I'll read all genres and all ratings, though I'd prefer no explicit violence/torture/mutilation. Abusive relationships, brainwashing, drug use, mpreg and non-con are other things I'd rather not read about. I'm also not big on rom-com tropes in shipfic, such as silly misunderstandings leading the couple not to talk to each other forever, etc. Angst is fine in general, however, and I don't mind dark themes. I have a thing for characters/pairings seen through others' eyes, so don't be afraid to use the POV of an outsider/someone who's not mentioned in the request.

Some examples of fics I've enjoyed can be found in my LJ memories or my AO3 bookmarks.

Tintin (Tintin, Captain Haddock)

I love Tintin and Haddock's friendship. I also ship them. Friendship and romance would both be lovely; just keep their canon BFF-ness intact, and I'm happy.

I've always loved the way Tintin and Haddock stick together through all sorts of dangers, the way they keep saving each other, the way they're so obviously the most important person in each other's lives... Slash would be great; so would genfic, though I'd prefer them not to be paired up with other people. Anything set during the adventures, or between them, or after -- serious, romantic, or humourous (though no pure crack, please) -- would be wonderful. Feel free to bring other characters, if you like! Tintin/Haddock (or Tintin & Haddock) from a villain's POV would be really fun to read.

I should mention that while I enjoyed the 2011 movie, I'd prefer it if the story sticks to book canon only. Feel free to write the story in French, if you want.

Keeping Up Appearances (Hyacinth)

I chose Hyacinth because I love her, but really -- any story about any character in this fandom would be great!

I think Hyacinth is a fabulous character in all her infuriatingness, and I love reading fanfic about her. But I'm so easy in this fandom! Even if you don't want to write Hyacinth after all, that's not a problem -- a story about Richard, or Elizabeth, or Daisy, or Sheridan (or whomever) would be just as welcome. Gen, het, slash, and femmeslash would all be totally fine (though no incest, please). But if you want some prompts, how about:

-- Hyacinth's first meeting with Onslow
-- What happens during a candlelight supper?
-- Hyacinth vs Sylvia Barker-Finch: the great showdown

I'm not really looking for darkfic in this fandom (I love the running gags and the humour too much). A bit of angst would be fine, though I'd rather it be resolved by the ending.

And if you're not aware of it already, you're totally welcome to join/watch bucketresidence. *g* It's not a high-traffic comm, but we're friendly!

Bröderna Lejonhjärta | The Brothers Lionheart -- Astrid Lindgren (Jonatan)

I'd love to know more about Jonatan's character -- we always see him through his brother's eyes, so it would be nice to get to know him a bit better.

Childhood favourite alert! Seriously, I love this book, deaths and all. I've no idea how many times I've read it. But I've always wondered a bit about Jonatan: he's so idealised, in so many ways, yet he clearly also has his worries (though he's fearless) and his doubts (though he always does the right thing). I'd be particularly interested in a story about when he first came to Nangijala and got involved in the resistance -- how did that happen so quickly? How do Sofia, Hubert, and Jossi feel about him? How does he feel about them? Given that Jonatan's only 13 years old in the book (though he's certainly wise and brave beyond his years), pairing him up with one of the adults would be too squicky to me, unfortunately. A possible solution, if you'd like to write shipfic, is to go with movie canon, where he's obviously much older. In that case, I'd happily read Jonatan/anyone but Karl (just not an incest fan, I'm afraid); Jonatan/Orvar or Jonatan/Jossi could be particularly interesting.

If it is an option, I'd love to receive a story in Swedish, Danish, or Norwegian. (This goes for the other fandoms as well, but for this one in particular.)

Earthsea -- Ursula K. LeGuin (Jasper, Vetch)

I'm interested in Vetch and Jasper's friendship and how it was affected by Ged's arrival. I'd also love to see more of these characters. Gen and slash would both be welcome!
.
Pretty much what it says above. I was always disappointed that we see so little of these two after the first Earthsea novel, so future!fic would be of interest. Backstory or fic about their time on Roke would also be very neat. Given their differing (to say the least) relations with Ged, I think there's much to explore here. (I could totally believe that Jasper was jealous of Ged's friendship with Vetch, for instance.)

Well, I'll stop babbling and let you think for yourself. *g* Hope the letter was useful and that you'll have fun!

Love,
Miss M.
