I've read and enjoyed several stories from
springtime_gen these last few weeks; here are some of my favourites. I'd love to see them all get more praise, so please remember to tell the author if you read and enjoy. :-)
First, the gift written for me:
By the light of lesser mortals (Dolores Umbridge)
Out of all the departments she could have ended up in, she got Magical Maintenance. There was absolutely nothing interesting about mop buckets and windows. Umbridge is a young, ambitious woman intent on not getting stuck in a dead-end job. The author does a wonderful job of describing her frustrations and aspirations. She's relatable without being sympathetic, human in the worst of ways.
The following ones are lovely, too:
How to Save a Life (Percy Weasley, Penelope Clearwater)
He was going to be about as useful to George on his death bed as he had been to Fred, and that idea made him want to do something very rash. Perhaps blow up an unoccupied cottage or break a really expensive broomstick over his knee. This story follows Percy and Penelope in their search for a rare plant that might save George's life. I loved the warm humour and thoughtful observations of this.
As Clever Does (Horace Slughorn, Seamus Finnigan, Pansy Parkinson, Luna Lovegood)
Seamus Finnigan was dead clever. He just didn't show it often. Witty, well-characterised and cleverly structured, this fic is both entertaining and, in an understated way, quite moving.
Strength in Numbers (Marietta Edgecombe, Millicent Bulstrode, Lavender Brown, Percy Weasley(/Audrey as a background pairing))
“Don’t go!” Millicent yelled: not in the commanding voice Marietta had expected, but a pain-tinged one that sounded familiar for entirely different reasons. It was the voice of someone grown accustomed to being judged on first sight, and yet unable to simply resign herself to all that entailed. A story about friendship and solidarity, hope, judgement, and second chances -- and, of course, food.
