Darkfic recs

I'm very much looking forward to hp_darkfest, especially because it's my first time participating. Whee!

I did watch the fest last year, however, and while we're waiting for this round to start posting, I thought I'd rec some of my favourites from 2008. (I should warn you, though, that these are chilling -- read at your own risk!)

Small Mercy (Fenrir Greyback, werewolf narrator, a girl; R/NC-17) by pingrid
A wonderfully fresh perspective, gorgeous writing, and an ending that will make your skin crawl -- in the best of ways! Highly recommended.

Murderers (Madam Zabini, Kingsley Shacklebolt; R) by
mr_mercutio
Well-written, taut and suspenseful, this story takes some turns that will leave you breathless. I can't say much more for fear of spoiling, but it's an amazing piece.

Kitten Claws and Mudblood Wars (Dolores Umbridge; hard R ) by catsintheattic
A complex, fascinating portrayal of Umbridge that provides her with a backstory that only makes too much sense, as it were. I love stories about unsympathetic characters that manage to be IC while also showing their vulnerabilities, and this fic is a prime example of just that.

In Windows, His Stains (Sirius, Remus, Hermione, Draco, Ron, Harry, Luna, Snape; R) by cedarlibrarian
I don't often read fanfic-as-poetry, but this piece is really cool: I especially love how each character gets their own metre, and how Harry's darkness is revealed to us little by little.

Of course, these are only a few of the great contributions, so you might want to check out the 2008 masterlist too.
