You know, I could deal with the "poor baby is the way he is because his fanonically prostitute mother fanonically abused him" woobiefication stuff (and by "deal with" I mean "roll my eyes at") -- but when Javert apologists not only claim that he is the true hero of Les Misérables and "the bravest, truest, most genuinely honorable and decent person" in canon, but also try to make Jean Valjean out to be a bad guy, or "okay-ish" at the most? Then all bets are off.
Because when you brush off Valjean's suffering (of course he deserved those 19 years of hard labour! and he shouldn't complain, because he learned to read in prison!) -- as well as the fact that he's a good and genuinely unselfish person -- in order to make Javert look better... Well, then I can't help suspecting you lack empathy as well as reading comprehension, sorry.
God, I'll take the Snapewives any day. At least they were good for a laugh.
*sigh*
(I think this is the reason why I'm not into pre-redemption Valjean/Javert fic -- I honestly think Valjean deserves better. And this is not Javert-bashing, because he's one of my favourites, but he IS fucked-up and if Jean Valjean is going to be in a sexual relationship with anyone, I want it to be with someone who respects him and loves him and recognises his awesomeness. /super-protective of Valjean)
At least I'm having some fun picturing the apologists time-travelling to the 1820's in order to stan their Misunderstood Hero, whereupon Javert promptly arrests them for some minor infraction. Then they can spend five years in a 19th Century bagne and see how much they like it.
