Random thought about woobiefication

May 13, 2013 10:44

It just struck me that part of the reason why I don't like woobiefication of antagonistic characters, apart from the OOC-ness/cliches/the way it usually makes the characters less interesting, is the way it often tends to read as an attack on the characters who are being antagonised in canon: if they are not written as directly or indirectly responsible for woobiefied!antagonist's actions, then they are at least vilified for not being more understanding of/sympathetic to the woobie's plight. Which means the things woobiefied!antagonist inflicts upon them in canon are ignored or downplayed, as if the pain of these characters doesn't mean anything, or is insignificant compared to the woobie's pain. And I'm not comfortable with that, for a number of reasons.

... right, just had to get that out. *g*
