I am going to be having my students do a debate or a socratic seminar on Wednesday (or Thursday, depending) about "sweatshops" in third world countries. Reading the articles and listening to what my students have said so far has been so interesting that I thought you all might find it interesting too.
The first article that my students received can be found at
http://www.libertyparkusafd.org/lp/Hancock/Globalization%20Sites%5CA%20World%20Connected%20-%20Sweatshops%20and%20Globalization.htm While I am choosing the order that the students are receiving the articles, they were chosen by my Cooperating Teacher, so any bias or disagreement you have is with her. However, she has been using this material for a couple of years and knows her stuff, so I am keeping an open mind.
I will keep posting the articles as I get through them, but I won't put in my opinions until after I hold the debate with my students. You, however, are welcome to have the debate in this forum and any other article based posts.
The rules are simple:
1. Be respectful, no attacks on individuals, no racist or homophobic language
2. Understand that people have experience that you do not, so read their experiences with an open mind, not everything can be backed up with statistics.
3. That said, respectfully presented, facts and statistics are always welcome and will be considered by all parties, in spite of personal experience.
4. This is a public entry on Livejournal, please keep that in mind in your comments.
5. My journal, I have the final say on comment threads.
