Discussion time this week. Everybody is so keen to put forward their opinions. I like discussions because I to enjoy telling people what I think but it is extremely hard sometimes because you can log in one minute and there will be 2 entries, and log in 5 minutes later and there will be 20 entries!!!!! This weeks discussions as well as tutorial and lecture is based around Remembering Babylon. I find the character of Gemmy so interesting because you have the European society and then you have the Aboriginal society and then there is Gemmy right in the middle. On the one hand he knows that he is originally apart of the European society but he has been raised by the Aborigines and so has been opened up to a completely different understanding of the world. Why are the Europeans so threatened by him?? I think it is because they know that Gemmy has the ability to see the world in two different lights. By allowing him to be
accepted back into their society they are aware that he will have the ability to practice both European and Aboriginal beliefs therefore he will know more than them. If he is successful in being accepted as both European/ Aboriginal, then an even bigger threat would be that other Aborigines may be able to learn European traditions also and therefore become more powerful.
However characters such as Janet and Mr Frazer both seem to gain enlightenment through spending time with Gemmy and they seem to benefit from this. Should the rest of the European community do the same? they to would have as much knowledge as the Aboriginal community but would they use that against them???? I think yes!!!
Greed is a very dangerous thing and I feel it can hold a person back from taking chances, and what is life without risks??
