Performing Shakespeare
This week's lecture was fantastic!!!! I love love LOVED it!!!
It is definitely one thing to read and analyze and pull apart Shakespeare's work but it is definitely another thing to act Shakespeare out loud....and it is 100% effective.
Even after the lecture, we were all still insulting each other with Shakespearean language and we thought we were extremely funny and clever!!!
Whilst watching my peers act out specific scene's from The Tempest. I couldn't help feeling my teaching instincts kick in. I think when I one day teach Shakespeare, I would love to teach it the way we are being taught at the moment. I think it's extremely important for students to gain understanding of Shakespeare beyond the text. After all, Shakespeare's works are play's, they are not novel's and so should be acted out loud in order to produce a better understanding.
I think all of the approaches that were taken to teaching Shakespeare in the workshop were really effective teaching strategies. When using language like Shakespeare's, it is easy for students to give up because they find it too difficult. I think by allowing them to get up and act it out, will help with understanding through action and therefore they will enjoy it as much as I enjoyed it!!!
I think it was great how positive enforcement was used continually as well to help encourage participation.
A really excellent workshop!!! I'm glad we get to do it again next week!
