Who Wants To Live Forever
It was a warm summer’s night, the smell of scented flowers hanging on the thick air. Two men sat on a chair on the porch, arms rested comfortably around one another in a posture that they had obviously sat in many times before. A faint breeze eddied around them, as the taller man’s fingers ran through the others hair, that famous fair hair that was now white with the years that had passed.
“Jim...” Leonard McCoy murmured, turning his face to brush his lips against Jim’s white hair, “Jim...?”
“Thinking Bones.” Jim muttered back, shifting slightly to get closer to his husband and lover of almost 70 years, “Just thinking.”
“What about?” Leonard’s lips lightly pressed against Jim’s forehead.
“I never understood...”
“Understood what darlin’?”
“Why you stayed. All these years, why did you stay?”
There was silence for a moment as Leonard’s eyes squeezed closed, and his arms tightened around his lover. “Because I love you as much today as the first day I saw you.”
Jim’s mouth curled up in a small dreamy smile, blue eyes closing, “You told me you might throw up on me.”
“Yes...” Leonard’s throat closed up, “And you patronised me.”
“Space is disease and danger wrapped in darkness and silence...” Jim quoted, laughing softly, “And yet you still were the Chief Medical Officer on the USS Enterprise with me.”
“As if I could let you go alone.” Leonard whispered, “As if I could leave you.”
“I love you Bones...” Jim mumbled, “Always have...”
“I love you too Jim. I love your recklessness, I love your stubbornness, I love the way you laugh...” And he looked down, the tears beginning to fall as he saw Jim’s chest unmoving with breath, “I love how you looked at me and saw past all the bullshit, I love how you stayed, how you defied all the odds...”
Crying in earnest now, he kissed his husbands still warm lips, and clung to him, “Oh Jim...Jim...this was one no win scenario we could not win. How can I live forever without you?”
But there was no answer except for the faint wind, rustling the curtains of the old home, far from anywhere.
