Going from
to

Using Gimp 2.2

1. Dublicate the base and desaturate the copy. Set it to soft light, opacity 100.

2. Dublicate your base again and bring it to the top. Set it to screen, opacity 100.

3. Now I used the Hue+Saturation: MASTER Saturation: +40

4. Create a new layer: #c34848 setting it to subtract, opacity 25,5.

5. Create another new layer: #a0c8f9 setting it to burn, opacity 39,5.

6. Merge all.

7. Now I did a Color Balance: MIDTONES:  -6, -11, -20

8. Now I used the Channel Mixer: RED:  95, 0, 0

9. Hue+Saturation: MASTER Saturation: +20

10. Create a new layer: #ff0000 setting it to darken only, opacity 18.

11. Merge all.

12. I used the Channel Mixer: RED:  87, 0, 0

13. Another Color Balance: MIDTONES:  37, 39, 53

14. Dublicate this layer and set it to screen, opacity 35.

15. Merge all.

16. Hue+Saturation: MASTER Saturation: +22

You're done! :)

Now you can sharpen it or add textures.
