I'm just as guity as the next guy, but you know what I find to be really insulting? When people assume something about you. It's not really just the assuming, but it's the fact that they'll actually say it to you. For example: "oh, it's something you wouldn't like," or when they start telling you about something in great detail because they assume you've never heard of it before or are too stupid to know about it. I'm not sure if it's possible to not assume. It's probably just human nature because there's no way we can possibly know everything about everyone, but for some reason it really bothers me. Especially when someone assumes I won't like something or can't do something. It's like, let me figure it out for myself if I like it or not, or can do it or not.
Ok that was random. Nothing really triggered it either, it just popped into my head while thinking about past events/conversations. Actually no, I just realized that something did trigger a thought which triggered that thought. Anyway..
So something I learned about myself this week, and my students, is that I assumed they were capable of certain intelligence, but they blew me away this week with how smart they really are. I have never felt so proud of them. These past couple of weeks have really made me realize how much I love my profession, and love middle school, and can't wait to see how I turn out as a teacher down the road when I start to really get it together. I look forward to showing people how capable students in special education are and how wrong it is to assume that kids in special ed. are stupid.
Anyway, I've got to go. Time's up, the boyfriend is here.
