Work placement

So, today was the first day of my work placement at The Newsletter. And it was....rubbish. I spent the first two hours being totally ignored, although the news editor did try and pawn me off with some nonsense about wanting me to read the paper and come up withs stories that I liked and disliked. When he finally returned to me and asked for my opinions, he clearly wasn't listening, and wasn't terribly subtle about it either.

After a while I was given some press releases to re-write and briefs to write, nothing very interesting and to be honest I don't feel like I did a very good job of them. Later on in the afternoon I got to shadow another journalist whilst he interviewed the Children's Commissioner Patricia Lewsley, which was at least interesting even if I didn't actually do anything other than drink tea and listen.

After that, more press releases, more being ignored. Even when I was actually talking to the news editor, he seemed to ignore me. Which was nice.

I have to say, I really can't be bothered going in again tomorrow, but it has to be done. If I can spend three months at the Child Support Agency then surely I can cope with a month here. The worst thing is that I can't actually come up with any story ideas of my own, so I have a feeling I'm going to be returning to college in April with a load of re-written press releases.

A career in journalism is probably not on the cards.
