"Shawn, I know I told you I wanted to get together that night. But you turned me down. You're the one who said no. You really thought I'd just sit back and pine while you had your fun with Abigail? You're smarter than that, Shawn."
Juliet looked at her reflection in the bathroom mirror and tried to make her face looks strong and sure. She knew he would be able to see right through her. Just like he always does.
When she heard that Shawn had broken up with Abigail, Juliet couldn't lie to herself; she was ecstatic. It had been almost five months since Mr. Chang had been arrested and Jules had told Shawn that she thought it would be a good idea for them to get together for an actual date. She had no idea that Shawn was already seeing Abigail when she poured her soul out to him in that drive in theater.
Juliet turned on the water in the sink and splashed her face with the cold water. She thought about calling in sick to work. She knew Shawn and Gus were working on a case and would be at the station for the most part of the day. She also knew that Carlton would, under no circumstances, allow her to take a sick day. She could be on her death bed and he wouldn't allow it.
Jules reluctantly finished getting ready for work and went into her kitchen. her apartment was tiny and could barely qualify as livable, but it worked for Juliet. The hardwood floors were beautiful and she liked the sound her heels made when she walked across the kitchen.
She had already started on her second cup of coffee when there was a soft knock on the door. It was only 7:15. Who could possibly be at the door at this time. She put her cup down and pushed her chair away from the table just as the knock came again, harder this time.
"Juliet, Juliet! Wherefore art thou, Juliet!" Shawn's voice was high pitched and cartoonish. Just what she would expect from the man with the mental capacity of a 12 year old; the man she loved.
This was going to be tougher than she had planned. She wasn't going to be able to turn him down as easily as she hoped she'd be able to do.
Juliet didn't realize that she had been standing with her hand on the door knob without turning it.
"Come on, Jules." Shawn knocked again. "I brought a delicious fruit with me."
Juliet took a breath and turned the knob and the door swung open. Apparently Shawn had been leaning against it because he came falling across the threshold right into Juliet.
"Shawn!" She exclaimed as she pushed him away from her chest.
Shawn straightened up. "Hey Jules. Me and my delicious fruit here thought it'd be nice to stop by, isn't that right Gus?" Shawn slapped Gus on the chest.
GUS! Jules had never before been so happy to see Shawn's tag-along tagging along. Maybe she wouldn't have to do it today. It could wait another day. Another week. Maybe she wouldn't have to tell him at all. But she knew she had to. As much as she didn't want to. But she promised herself when Shawn turned her down that she was not going to be that girl; the girl who sits and waits and pines. But she did. She did pine. Silently.
"I am not a fruit, Shawn." Guster glared at Shawn then turned and smiled at Juliet. "Good morning, Detective. We thought we'd come over and see if there were any leads on the case. Can we come in?"
Jules nodded her head. "Of course! Come in."
Chief Vic had immediately called Shawn and Gus when the murder of a ten year old boy had come up 3 days ago. This was not the first child to be murdered. But, according to Chief Vic, it would certainly be the last. The first was a similarly hideous murder: a nine year old boy was riding his bike home from school when he was knocked to the ground and beaten to death with a baseball bat. A woman was jogging by on the trail through the park when she saw him on the ground, covered in blood. The authorities pegged it as bullies who had taken things too far but as soon as Shawn had stepped on the crime scene he knew it couldn't have been bullies. The footprints that surrounded the body were obviously that of a grown man, the baseball bat had all but been broken to shards. It was evident that this man more strength than you're average playground bully. (Shawn seriously wondered how these people solved any crimes around here.) The second, more recent, murder was just as gruesome, if not more so.
Apparently, ten year old Billy Henderson had run down the street to the grocery store to pick up some milk for his mother. It was just down the block. He could even see the lights of the store from the steps of his tiny house. He had told his mother he would be back in a few minutes with the things on the list he held in his hand. He never returned. A little over half way there he was approached by a man dressed in a black hoodie and jeans. Words were exchanged and after 1 minute and 28 seconds, according to the security camera perched on the awning of the grocery store, the man grabbed the boy and led him down the next alleyway. The boy was found 45 minutes later when his mother frantically came looking for him. His attacker had slit the boy's throat.
Jules remembers arriving to the scene of the first crime and having to excuse herself. She quickly walked to the end of the alleyway and promptly threw up her dinner. She slid down the wall of the building she was holding on to and began to sob. She remembers hearing footsteps coming towards her and she quickly regained her composure. It was Shawn. There were no jokes, no snarky remarks. He walked up to her and wrapped his warm arms around her.
"Jules. Shhhh." Shawn ran his hand through her blonde hair and squeezed her in his embrace. She sniffled a few more times and then she straightened up. Juliet looked into Shawn's eyes and saw sincere concern on his face. Her heart fluttered and she began crying again but for a completely different reason. She knew she was still in love with this man. Just like she had always been.
"Shawn. I..." she started but she couldn't finish it. Shawn lifted his hand to her chin and tilted her head up. He brought his lips down to hers. Juliet's lips parted and she welcomed Shawn's warm mouth on hers. They stood together, joined at the lips, for 23 seconds more. Juliet couldn't remember who had pulled away; if it was Shawn who suddenly remembered that he had a girlfriend or if it was Juliet who remembered the promise she made to herself not to become that kind of girl.
Juliet was brought back from her trip down memory lane when Shawn and Gus began bickering over her old roast beef sandwich that had been stowed in the refrigerator for the past week.
"Dude, it's Juliet. And she's not going to eat it anyway." Shawn was holding the wrapped sandwich over his head out of Gus's reach.
"How many times have I told you, Shawn. It's rude to raid other people's refrigerators without their expressed permission. Remember that left over box of Pad Thia noodles I had in my fridge last week? I never gave you permission to eat that!" Gus retorted.
"Gus. That box of delicious Thia food had clearly been in there a week and everyone knows that week old food is fair game for guests. Isn't that right, Jules?"
Juliet couldn't help but grin at Shawn. All those thoughts of turning him down had flown the coop. Why should she? She loved him. She always had.
And I think I have one more to do right now. But you can always leave a comment for more. :)
