Travel writing, like any profession, has its advantages, the most obvious being the job itself: exploring faraway places on someone else’s dime. One drawback, though, is that travel writers are rarely able to immerse themselves in any one place.
But six years ago, after a week on assignment in Mérida, the capital of the Mexican state of Yucatán, Adam McCulloch and Emma Sloley were intent on returning.
