I have officially been in Athens for one week. I arrived at the airport a 26 hours after I left in the outskirts of Athens. The taxi was a rip off, but I got to my hotel alright. The next day I got to the school where I study now which is right next to the Estadio. It is the ancient Olympic stadium. We can see it out the windows of the classroom. It is soooo cool.
The people in my apartment are pretty fun. I am living in the same room as a girl named Emily who is very athletic and funny. Next door are Katie and Maggie. Katie is half greek and speaks a little bit of it. She is giving me “Greek lessons” on occasion. Maggie is Canadian…and we tease her a lot about it. In the one single in our apartment is Jenny. She isn’t there very much but there is a bit of a rift forming between us and her.
The entire class totals to 20 people and one teacher. The teachers name is Bob. He is an interesting personality. He knows a lot about what he is talking about, but you would never have thought that from looking at him. He makes odd comments to people sometimes, and is either hurtful or funny. Its hard to tell where he is trying to go with things sometimes. His lectures are tough to follow and it is difficult to figure out exactly what he wants us to know. But it’s a-ok!!
We have been to the acropolis 4 times already and we are heading back up there tomorrow. It is the very top of the city and you can see all corners of Athens and the water from up there. I have learned a lot about ancient architecture and statues. It is neat to be able to look at something and get a pretty clear idea of when it was made just by checking a few simple things.
Yesterday I went to Delphi to consult Apollo’s oracle. Hehe. We ran the length of a stade in the Delphic stadium at the top of a large mountain of ruins and tributes to people. The sights were beautiful. We went to two churches on the way and a museum of Delphic remains on the way back.
Today is the 21st birthday of one of the girls on the trip so we took her to a club on the beach last night. It was absolutely beautiful! Drinks here are 10 euros which is a LOT! But we do a fair amount of drinking in our rooms at night. The club was fun and right on the water. It was quite beautiful.
Today was our first day off from class. We went to the beach. It was just great!!! The water was perfect and the sand was so nice. It was a bit rocky where we were, but it just added character to the scene. I went into the water for a while and then fell asleep on the beach. It was amazing!!! There were lots of men in speedos which was quite the culture shock!!
I have to get going, they are closing the computer lab. I LOVE YOU!!
