I miss S1 of VM. After being subjected to the abject horror that was S3, I don't think I could ever return to that show and trust it, but S1 was a gem.
I have my criticisms of the Serena/Blair friendship too, but I don't really take this show or its characters very seriously thus my favorite character is Chuck because he such an asshole. I like Blair because she's a bit of a bitch and I think Serena is drippy. This show brings out my ruthless, mean girl side. lol. I think its because its all presented with this distancing, frame narrative of it being gossip and gossip is inherently a petty activity involving enjoying other's pain and misfortune.
The only time I take the show on a more serious level is when it hits these intertextual buttons referencing (for me) other teen!dramas like Roswell, Dawson's Creek, The OC, Veronica Mars, etc. through its dealing with the tropes of teen!drama like the dreamgirl/boy relationship or the child knows best theme. Then, I just get persnickety about it because I hate those tropes as they reproduce the worst aspects of immature, teenage thinking usually without deigning to criticize that thinking which I then proceed to do for them. :)
