Funfair Visit
“You bastard, why didn’t you tell me?”
Arthur instantly moved the phone away from his ear and sat up in his bed.
“What the hell, Merlin?”
“Why didn’t you tell me about the funfair? Gwen asked me whether I had already been there and up to that moment I didn’t even know that it was in town.”
“And why are you yelling that at me? While I’m still asleep, may I add.”
“Because usually you go there with me on day one. Wait, did I wake you?”
Arthur heaved a sigh. “Yes.”
Suddenly Merlin’s voice didn’t sound that angry anymore. “Sorry. That wasn’t my intention.”
“Yeah well, nothing you could do about that now. Am I interpreting your phone call full of accusations right if I assume that you’re asking me whether I’m free this afternoon so that I’ll make sure you won’t throw up onto your jeans or get trapped by candy floss?”
“Er, yes. Please?”
“Alright, I’ll be at the entrance at three o’clock. Happy?”
“Very much. Thanks Arthur.”
Arthur sank back into bed and covered his face with a pillow. He couldn’t shake the feeling that Merlin would never grow up and always depend on someone - this someone being Arthur.
**~**
Merlin was worried. Arthur was never late and it was already thirty minutes after three o’clock. Thirty minutes! In Arthur’s world that normally meant definite and absolute doom. And now he was the one running late. Maybe he had had an accident or someone else who was close to him. Morgana? Merlin tried to phone him for the 10th time. No one answered. Oh God, what if Arthur was at the hospital?
“Hey, Merlin. Sorry I’m late.”
“Arthur!” Merlin’s heart stopped and he flung his arms around Arthur’s neck. “Don’t you ever do this to me again. Do you hear me?”
“Uncle Arthur why is he squashing you?”
Merlin instantly took a few steps back. Percy and Elena were standing next to Arthur, staring up at their uncle.
“Elena, that’s obvious. They missed each other. Mum always says that if you love someone and you haven’t seen them in a long time, you hug them in order to feel that they’re truly there.”
Arthur’s cheeks turned red at that and Merlin’s own were most likely even redder.
“Percy, I think Merlin was just a little bit worried because we’re late.”
“Sorry, Merlin. I had to go to the toilet before we left and it took a little bit longer.”
“No problem, Elena. Ready to have fun?”
And with happy smiles on their faces the two children walked into the direction of the first ride that caught their eye.
“Why are they here? Not that I mind but...” I thought it was just going to be the two of us so that I could finally confess that I love you.
Arthur looked slightly angry while answering. “I forgot that I promised Morgana to look after them. And just when I wanted to leave my sister was standing in front my door her six year old daughter and her ten year old son in tow.”
“Alright, calm down. It’s not the end of the world.”
“I know. But now, you can’t eat all these delicious things and then go on all the rides. I don’t want you throwing up in front of the kids.”
“Promise me we’ll go another time next week to do that and I’ll help you baby-sit.”
“Okay.”

After numerous rides on various carousels for the two children, Merlin proclaimed that it was time they did something together. He had wanted to go to the funfair to have fun after all and not just to stand aside and watch others amusing themselves.
“How about a ride on the ghost train?”
Like every child in Merlin’s opinion should, Elena and Percy shouted with joy and immediately ran towards the entrance. This changed however instantly when they were engulfed by the darkness. Elena had insisted that she sat next to her uncle which left Merlin at Percy’s side. When the first zombies appeared, Elena moved closer to Arthur who laid his arm around her. Behind the two Percy laughed and Merlin joined him. The faces didn’t look realistic at all and the mechanisms were easily detected from the jerking movements of the puppets. The vehicles became faster and when an especially sharp turn followed, Elena cried out. Through the darkness Merlin could see Arthur bending further towards her, trying to comfort her.
After some more minutes they were outside again, Elena still clinging to Arthur’s shirt and refusing to let go. Her face was buried in the red fabric and Arthur stroked her blond locks. Merlin crouched down in front of her.
“Hey, little princess. Why are you crying?”
Elena moved her head but stayed close to Arthur.
“It was so dark and all those faces were staring at me.”
“But you were brave. I mean you survived these malicious attacks.”
“Only because Uncle Arthur kept them from hurting me.”
Merlin looked up at the blond and saw him smiling down at him. His heart beat faster and he quickly focused on Elena again.
“Then we should thank your uncle by letting him choose the next ride?”
Elena bobbed her head up and down and looked up at Arthur.
“What do you want to do?”

Arthur decided it was time for the house of mirrors. So far every time Merlin and he had been there, Merlin had walked into a wall. Arthur always told him that he needed to extend his arms and walk slowly but today he still ignored the advice. Percy and Elena luckily listened to their uncle because like this Arthur only had one child to look after.
“Merlin, not that direction. That’s where we came from.”
“No, it’s not. You know, Arthur Pendragon, you don’t have the best sense of direction among us, that’s clearly - ”
But before Merlin could reveal that person, he bumped straight into a wall. Elena and Percy couldn’t control their laughter and Arthur joined in after making sure Merlin wasn’t gravely injured (which had happened before so there was reason to be concerned).
“Haha, very funny.” Merlin scowled at them.
The children approached him and dragged him to Arthur, putting their hands together.
“I think Arthur should lead you through this. Last year he helped me, too. He’s really good at it, I didn’t get hurt at all”, Elena explained, looking serious.
Arthur stared at their joined hands, smirking.
“Come along then. You heard it: I’m the expert.”
To Arthur’s surprise Merlin actually followed him without complaining (much). It was fun to walk the corridors of glass, hearing Percy’s and Elena’s laughter while they chased each other. Some corridors were narrower than others and in those Merlin walked so close behind Arthur that the blond could feel the other’s breath on his neck.
“We made it!”
“And that’s a very important point because if we didn’t, we would be stuck in there until your mother came and saved us.”
Arthur smiled to himself. Merlin just had this way with children. He never made them feel stupid or embarrassed but encouraged them. Elena and Percy always talked caringly about him and Arthur knew they liked him.
“Uncle Arthur can I shoot something?”
Arthur didn’t see anything speaking against Percy’s wish so they went to the shooting gallery, picking up candied almonds on their way. Percy and Arthur each picked up a gun and shot a few times. To Arthur’s embarrassment Percy hit one more time than he did. Arthur was sure Merlin would never let him hear the end of it. He got beaten by a ten year old.
Percy proclaimed that Elena should choose something and she almost instantly picked a stuffed, little heart and handed it to Merlin.
“As thank you for spending the afternoon with us.”
Merlin blushed and Arthur couldn’t avert his eyes from the beauty that was Merlin with flushed cheeks.
“Uncle Arthur? Are you okay?”
Elena looked at him concerned and Arthur shook his head.
“Yes, of course. So, one last ride and then we have to get you two back home.”
Immediate protest was expressed but Arthur insisted.
“So, what do you want to do as last ride of the day?”
The two thought about it for a few seconds and then proclaimed, “The Ferris wheel.”
“The Ferris wheel it is.”
As they walked off into the direction of the giant wheel, the sun was already close to the horizon and painted the sky in pleasant shades of orange and red.
They all sat down in the capsule and Arthur felt heat radiating from where his and Merlin’s leg touched. Another one of those touches and smiles that constituted the easiness between them. And maybe they were small reasons for the affections that had appeared lately whenever Arthur was with Merlin.
When they were high up for the first time Elena whispered something into Percy’s ear. The boy whispered back and then they both turned towards the two adults.
“What are you two up to?” Arthur eyed them suspiciously.
Elena hesitated but her brother was more direct. “Elena was wondering whether you two are a couple.”
Arthur turned his head and saw Merlin had done the same. He nervously cleared his throat.
“Er, how did you get that idea?”
This time Elena answered. “You always look at each other that way Snow White and her Prince do. Or Belle and Beast.”
Oh great. So two children noticed Arthur’s feelings but Merlin didn’t?
