I have no photo of tonight's spectacular material science failure.
But here goes:
I had a blow-out on my bike. I think the tire is fine. Possibly the tube is even fine. What "blew-out" was that the edge of the rim explosively sheared off of the wheel.
A thin strip of steel ripped off the wheel, forced off by the tire? maybe?-which was *maybe* 5psi over pressure at most-so the tire and the tube blew off the side of the wheel, what with there being nothing there to hold them on anymore. I had to break off the strip of steel from where it was still attached, just so that I could wheel my bike some place to lock it up.
WTF??!!? Is this even a thing that *happens*?? I mean, to people who are not me?
palmwiz had never heard of it before. I know I hadn't.
This, btw, happened in the middle of Union Square, Somerville during evening rush hour. It turns out that it's surprisingly easy to control a bike to get safely to the side of the road, when the back wheel explodes.
Also? last night putting in the eye-bolts for the hammock, I sheared a 1/4" drill-bit off in the wood-framing of the house. This was only shortly after the Pyrex wtf. At least these earlier two failures are things that Happen.
I'm a little nervous to put the kayaks on the van tomorrow. I had a dream a few days ago that one of the roof-rack rails ripped off and threw a kayak off the back of the van, breaking it in half.
um.
