Title: Somewhat of an Endearing Nickname
Author: miss_auto1621
Characters: England, Belgium
Challenge: Holiday Winter Challenge-Theme #15: Dear
Rating: K
Summary: It was their designated nickname. EngBel.
A/N: For pale-jonquil.
He didn’t really remember when they started using the word ‘Dear’ for each other. It was always just there and they never really minded it at all. England just didn’t use it with everyone, though. Not even with other females. It was only for her, and he noted that Belgium did the same thing. She didn’t even call her own brother ‘Dear’, and he never heard her tell Spain, either.
He thought she said it rather cute.
“Dear, do you mind if we drink hot chocolate?”
“Dear, the red coat has a better design.”
“I always thought your scones were yummy, dear.”
She was always the most appreciative of her cooking, once America left, that is. Now that he thought about it, he never referred to America as ‘dear’, either. And somehow, he was glad for that. It would have hurt a lot more to have to stop calling him that if he ever saw him later on. It was best for him to assign that to just one person, one that really deserved it.
She always thought he softened up whenever he said the word.
“Oh, dear, you look lovely!”
“I must say, dear, that I dislike the French language, but it is rather adorable when you speak it.”
“Dear, what are these pastries made of? Did you put magic into them?”
She liked it a lot better than ‘darling’, too. It just didn’t sound right to here, whereas ‘dear’ was more sincere and polite.
She figured that was why they called each other by that. There was nobody they trusted more with the word than they did with each other. Because they knew that through the ups and downs, they would continue to be dear to one another. No nation would ever change that. No nation ever could. It was just their way of expressing their love by not using a severely cheesy name, and it didn’t sound embarrassing at all.
Yes, dear was just perfect.
A/N 2: *looks around to make sure nobody throws popcorn at her* This was not meant to turn out as a reflective kind of fic, but it did. And I liked it. And…the prompt was not meant to be stretched since I use the word on a daily basis and the dialogue would have been excessively corny. I just wanted to avoid that and go with my gut feeling. And I felt that with this prompt, it should be kept simple. Hopefully, you all enjoyed, nonetheless!
