Fifteen thousand people watch me work every night; but these people weren’t cheering. They were dead. Inanimate, departed, pushing up the daisies… counting the worms. So far, I’ve found twenty two as it rained last night, making the ground nice and soggy. Perfect for my patrol tonight. Afterwards, I’ll get to go home, kick off mud-coated boots and have a real long soak in the bath. Maybe with some bubbles, that would be lovely.

I take the same path every night, well... until tonight. Variation, frightening isn’t it? Well, it’s my birthday today, so I fancy a change. At the dirt crossroad, I ignored my natural instincts and headed right instead. I pointed my flashlight left and right along the path… not really sure what I’m looking for or have ever looked for in all my nights, but it makes me feel like I’m doing my job well.

One grave unusually caught my attention, belonging to a Thomas Kirk. It was a new headstone, which is probably why I noticed it. The lack of weathering damage and weeds growing around it, the marble was still clean and fresh. I knelt down beside it to get a closer look; “Everything About You Was So Easy To Love.” What a sweet epigraph, written by his wife it seems. Ah well, I’ve got a job to do, can’t be distracted. It’s roughly one in the morning and I plan on being back home in an hour. I planned to anyway.

As I stood up and took a step back, the ground below me sunk and my foot fell into a hole. Perfect, just what I needed. I tried to pull it out, but something was preventing it from moving. Fuck. I tugged harder, which seemed to do the job as the hold over my foot was broken. Broken?

“The fuck? Oh… god!” A mouldy, grey… hand was wrapped around my ankle, the scaly fingers digging into my skin. It had been snapped off at the wrist, a brown, cracked bone poking out the bottom. I jumped up, shaking the decrepit hand off. My heart, racing, my mind, swirling… my eyes, not believing what I can see. The rest of the arm is poking through the hole, scrambling about violently.

Taking a few steps back, my mind finally registered what was happening and managed to convince my body to turn and get the hell out of there. I didn’t even pick up my torch, so I fumbled at first, but after reaching the graveyard entrance, the streetlights lit my way. It’s a ten minute walk to my apartment, but at the speed I was going it took less, thankfully. I was out of breath when I got to the front door, slowing down only to enter the door code before sprinting up the stairs to the sixth floor.

The front door was already unlocked and as I stepped through, a sugary sweet smell floated past my face. Cooking at this hour? As the door slammed shut, a familiar figure popped out of the kitchen, wearing an apron and oven mitts; his blonde hair was swept across his forehead with rosy cheeks and bright eyes.

“Oh, hello Matt, you’re home early, excellent!” The man winked at me, smiling coyly… momentarily taking my mind off the night’s horrors. Dom Howard, my best friend and current room-mate. We’d been friends since primary school, but after we both left to university, we still kept in contact and after graduating… we started living together. Some things in life are worth waiting for, I guess...

“Are you cooking something?” The blonde grinned widely and hopped from one foot to another.

“Of course, it’s your birthday cake. A happy 23rd birthday cake!”

“Hmm, it’s not so happy, I’m afraid.”

“What’s happened? How come you’re home so early? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”

“You have no idea.”
